In the space of the playground, where do you stand? When harmful echoes from a distant past kick in, you can stand only on one leg—one leg, one leg. No certain strings are holding you. How you get back to a solid position is a matter of strategy. Count: how many phases do you count? How many voices do you hear? Darling, you are the queer failure. What’s next? Find the courage to turn—first left, then right. Remember, no strings attached. Now on two legs. Jump: one leg, then one leg again. Face the wall. How do you get through? infoHaving a muscular body carries several meanings, built through verbal and non verbal languages that feed a specific narration about masculinity and power. Thanks to algorithms, flexing, posing, pushing are just some of the content you can come across as targeted users on TikTok and Instagram. In effect, generating a social media bubble that promotes a lifestyle based on extreme exercise, misogynistic behaviour, performance-enhancing drug consumption, and masculine power dynamics. Natty — on muscles and their meanings uses interviews and conversations to investigate the meaning of what it means to build the male body, embracing a kind of masculinity that is no longer sustainable. This film follows the protagonist spiraling thoughts as he attempts to analyze the contradictions between his deepest sexual desires and the queer values he fights for. The continuous light of a bare set reflects the character and narrator’s analytical gaze as he observes another man’s body. The story explores how gay desire is commonly shaped by male power dynamics embodied by statuary bodies. As the protagonist wonders how long this fight will last, he finds himself delving into the meaning of desiring these bodies with the aim of demolishing the oppressive male power they perpetuate.
