In Sanskrit, "saṃtati" means "continuity." Buddhist philosophy places a strong emphasis on the idea that the ‘self’ we think of is actually an accumulation of linked, transient events rather than an eternal entity, and that there is no such thing as a permanent ‘self’. The project proposes that the ‘self’ is not linear, but rather constructed from innumerable temporal and spatial fragments of one’s own experience, constantly rearranged, overlapping, modified, and constructed. The ‘self’ is fleeting and fluid. Starting with the memories and emotions triggered by a visit to a fabric shop in The Hague, Kai Jiao applies Carl Jung's psychoanalytic methodology to analyze how his past experiences have been continuously and profoundly shaping the construction of his ‘self’. Through sharing his personal story, Jiao brings awareness to the intricate relationship between the ‘self’ and memories, emotions, and possible self-shaping factors.

On January 28, 2022, a woman was captured on camera being locked in a run-down home in Feng County, Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province,China, with a chain around her neck. The father of the woman's eight children was portrayed positively in order to advance regional policies with the goal of reducing local poverty. The video and the article were taken down after the incident was made public, so accessibility was limited. According to an investigative report published on August 28 by the propaganda division of the county party committee of Feng County, the woman was mentally ill, she and the father were legally married, and there was no evidence of trafficking. Another report from the 30th Feng County investigation team stated that the woman was a vagrant who was taken in by the children's father and lived with him. However, as netizens investigated both online and offline, the Feng County and Xuzhou city governments issued contradicory notifications, and many offline investigations by netizens were halted by police. The official Chinese media remained silent following the revelation of the incident for at least two weeks, until February 17, when the Jiangsu Provincial government decided to form an investigation team and the official media stated they were anticipating the findings of the investigation. The incident was reported by the local government five times and was searched for and viewed more than ten billion times on Chinese social media platforms before Zhimin Dong, the father of eight children, was found guilty and given a six-year and six-month prison sentence on April 7, 2023, by the Xuzhou Intermediate People's Court in Jiangsu Province.Similar to before, this incident's spread was stopped and prohibited on the Chinese Internet. I attempted to document this event by using hidden messages. Resist dyeing, a well-known printing and dyeing technique from the Jiangsu province of China, uses patterned motifs that frequently reflect real-life experiences to convey the hopes and dreams of people for a better quality of life. To show my dissatisfaction, I created a fabric with an image of the thorn, the emblematic plant of Xuzhou, and the Nushu, the only writing system designed specifically for women in the world. Additionally, I used photographs of various symbols and landmarks from Xuzhou, including flowers, to create a portrait of the woman. I'll cover the portrait with the pattern so that an X-ray will be able to see the hidden message.

In 2021, 16 elephants in the Yunnan Province of China migrated from their sanctuary to the north. Along the way, they kept coming close to cities, causing a lot of damage and sparking discussion about the reasons for elephant migration. Much of the media attention in China and Western countries has been focused on the Chinese government's monitoring of the herds and the possibility of migration. On social media, people thought that the elephants were acting cutely and that the herd might have become disoriented. The Chinese government views this as proof of the success of environmental protection in China, despite the fact that experts in the vast majority of the discussions think these can be improved. In order to express my pessimism and discuss how media, technology, financialization, etc. affect environmental protection, I created this board game.

Erinnerung is an audio-visual installation by Kai Jiao developed as a gift to activist-illustrator Kiss Brian Abraham in celebration of their friendship. In the work, Jiao tells the activist's story and responds to climate and feminist urgencies in Zambia. In the accompanying digital flipbook, images from Jiao's archival research are combined with Abraham's personal drawings, photographs and recollections. In their conversations, the duo explore links between deforestation and women's rights and discover mutual interdependencies between the patriarchal societies of Zambia and China (Jiao's home country). The shape of the installation is meant to resemble the Mukula tree, which is regularly smuggled to China for furniture processing and medicinal treatment.

The intention of this project is to attempt to normalize the dying process and to consider the meaning of death through my fear of my parents' passing. This project will continue for a long time. Thus far, I have conducted interviews with two tattoo artists, Henk Schiffmacher and Bear Ramaker, as well as Eliza Schiffrin, a licensed clinical social worker. I then edited their responses in the interviews using a non-linear approach and combined them with sound and music. I demonstrated how tattoos relate to death and how they perceive it through sound.

The purpose of this project is to observe and reflect on how ASMR forms extended soft pornography of the male gaze ( listen ) in the game community under the background of visual pornography censorship. I present the process of the media from a producer of information to a concealer. The soft porn industry in ACG ( Anime, Cartoon & Game ) establishes advertising platforms through different media types, relying on images and sounds as a facade to spread seductive information while the real information is hidden deeper. Based on this, I use mixed media to produce an installation to present the system, directly showing the system's internal structure to inspire the audience's thinking.

Through the form of an Essay Film, this project observes and discusses the behaviour of people coping with the acceleration of society through rapid learning in China's booming knowledge economy, where the efficient use of time has become a systematic moral discipline. People expect to use the fragmented time to master knowledge to avoid being eliminated. However, for users, knowledge payment only enables users to complete "learning actions"', not real internalization. Based on this, I use Hartmut Rosa's social acceleration theory as theoretical support and present the current time anxiety and accelerated learning in Chinese society from the perspective of time.

The purpose of this project is to explore how the current "cloud storage" industry centered on the metropolis and the data understanding it produces are related to the ecological environment, border area, and energy reforms. With China's continuous and in-depth development of the digital economy, data has become an important means of production and is shrouded in real space through the incarnation of "cloud". The seemingly ubiquitous "cloud" is actually based on a large-scale infrastructure centre that consumes a lot of resources. Therefore, most of these data centers are built in the so-called border areas, thus continuously extracting cheap new energy from this area. Therefore, from the perspective of geopolitics, I analysed the relationship between the construction of China's data centre and the extraction of ecological resources. Through the establishment of a series of sand table maps, I hope to interpret this understanding of political ecology. Furthermore, 1hope to think about the relationship between the metropolis and the periphery.

From the perspective of the "body", this project aims to reflect on the emphasis on physical health and wellness in the workplace of this capitalist society. In the development of post-liberal capitalism, many high-productivity elite industries/Internet industries have built wellness systems for employees within the company. For example, gym, massage, acupuncture and ergonomic office equipment. The Internet companies increase the working hours of their employees by maintaining their physical fitness. Thus the employees' body has become an extension of the company and is closely linked with the company's operations. Based on this, I conducted a critique from the perspective of biopolitics. This thinking is extended into a series of collage works ( employees' daily work ) and three-dimensional animation ( body anatomy model), which are both opposite and unified. I hope to reflect on the special relationship between capital and labour through this.

2024Graduation Show 2024 Academy building Royal Academy of Art, The Hague Den Haag, Nederland In Sanskrit, "saṃtati" means "continuity." Buddhist philosophy places a strong emphasis on the idea that the ‘self’ we think of is actually an accumulation of linked, transient events rather than an eternal entity, and that there is no such thing as a permanent ‘self’. Through sharing his personal story, Jiao brings awareness to the intricate relationship between the ‘self’ and memories, emotions, and possible self-shaping factors. graduation.kabk.nl/ Groep
