On a cold day I met a community of sea swimmers. It was dark so I had to use a flash to illuminate the landscape.

While swimming in the sea, the waves make a sloshing noise that mimics screams, one body becomes body of water that becomes one with the sea.

This is ‘Where the sea kisses the shore’. I stand on a snowy beach in Iceland, wind bites through layers of wool and fleece. I drove here with the car’s heater on full blast, dressed in sweaters, jacket and hat but even with all this, I made one crucial mistake: forgetting my hand-knit gloves. My hands begin to shiver as I glance at the clock: 16:25. Darkness has taken over the landscape like a blanket gently tucking the world in for the night. I’m thankful for the tiniest glow of moonlight shining on the waves. All of a sudden the scene begins to brighten up, not from the sun’s return, no, headlamps bounce down a slope of snow, where I stand. A group of sea swimmers approach, their headlamps create these small halos that blend and form a soft collective glow, their faces light up so I grab my camera and try to keep it steady but the cold makes it difficult and I can tell the battery drains faster than usual. Watching them makes me wonder, how much energy it takes for a person to stay warm and balanced in weather like this. Music plays softly from a portable speaker and together they dance, slowly warming up their bodies for a very cold challenge (it seems). This moment feels distinctly Icelandic, embodying a culture deeply connected to its landscapes and the elements. Here, the sea isn’t just something to endure it’s something to embrace, share, and find strength within. In this unity their bodies of water become one with the sea. As they step in, each swimmer becomes a source of light quite literally making it possible for me to make this photograph and also symbolically. Without the sea swimmers and their headlamps there would be no light for an image.

2022Unfolding Territories The Grey Space in the Middle Den Haag, Nederland The Cockroach collective is a group of 45 students infesting the landscape of photography and exploring the possibilities of the medium to go beyond traditional definitions. Our exhibition UNFOLDING TERRITORIES: Co-creating Through Cartographies of Care is expanding the definition of care aiming at the broader understanding of what care means in the contemporary world and how art can be seen as a manifestation and tool of care. The act of creation is an act of care, creating work is a movement towards an expression of one's honest desire to connect with others. In our exhibition, we would like to share what we care about, in the ever-changing world that surrounds us. We have been driven to create an exhibition where everyone, the audience and the artists, felt seen and listened to. At our core, we are guided by equality, inclusivity, and respect. The willingness to take care of one another is a representative trait of our time when we all need additional support. These turbulent years are reflected in the ways we create work and the themes we explore. Furthermore, we want to challenge photography and explore it as a means of care to reflect our world today. With Unfolding Territories: Co-creating Through Cartographies of Care, we create a physical space that carries a proposition. What if creation is an act of care? You are invited to start a dialogue about what care could mean in society, betting on the idea that art can be truly transformative if it comes from a place of love, respect, and curiosity for the other. www.instagram.com/p/CXYbBofILmp/?img_index=1 Groep

Warmth of the cold KABK Den Haag / Reykjavík, Nederland www.jennymikka.com/hlyja-kuldans-warmth-of-the-cold The sea, with its unpredictable nature holds a touch of fear for many. It carries the ability to bring people together. As someone who grew up in a Nordic landscape, I had to form a bond with the cold wind in order to survive harsh winters. This upbringing sparked my curiosity about the people who willingly and fiercely befriend cold seawater. They gather as a shield, forming a circle of protection. Lost in the currents of the moment, they enter a state of flow, where time and danger dissolve. In this unity, their bodies of water become one with the sea. Time slips away, much like the grasp of winter, for they only have 2 minutes of time to dip into the sea. In that sense the cold forms a community of sea swimmers. “Hlýja Kuldans (Warmth of the Cold)” is an ode to all women who gather to confront their fears, united against a force seemingly greater than themselves. It speaks to nature’s incredible power to create a sense of purpose—belonging, facilitated by the sea. Through photography and moving images, it is a journey towards lower grounds, where the cold becomes warmth, and where a collective bond transcends the boundaries of fear. A quest to understand how being in (cold) sea water has a relationship with humans. The upbringing stories from a Nordic background is noticeable in how the subject of the sea is approached.
