She chews, crunches, slurps, screams, sings, whispers, and moans…. Through an erotic, sensual, and visceral listening experience of compost plated on a banquet table, Kexin Hao unfolds intimate relationships and proximities between our bodies and the discarded residues of what we eat. Borrowing from ASMR mukbang—a genre of online eating show in which a host consumes food and amplifies the sounds of eating and drinking to trigger a viewer’s autonomous sensory meridian response—Hao immerses visitors in a four-course meal and guides them into a world where guts morph into worms and tongues fondle soil. Titled Lewd Bouquet, here the human digestive system, culinary routines, and sexual rituals intermingle with decomposing processes and compost organisms. The aural feast culminates in a toast: “Canon of Filth,” a song composed by Hao where haunting waves of melodies imitate, follow, and delay one another. As staggered voices harmonize over one another, the canon begins to resemble layers of compost and the synchronization between our intestinal and the extrinsic realms. Touring in rounds of dissonance, it celebrates the unwholesome and brings us ever closer to the dead, the rotten, and the underground, where we make life, where we make love.

The research focuses on bats (in the coronavirus crisis) and sparrows (in the “eradicate 4 pests” hygiene campaign in China’s Great Leap Forward) as carriers of symbolism and materials for personification in relation to political narratives in national health agenda, and how it reflects our understanding of ecology and immunity. The outcome is a performance combining music, spoken words, singing (rap) and movements encrypting the research outcomes and using human bodies as sites for metaphors to reenact the bodies of bats. Once a villainized creature, this bat has become a role model, a pop star, and a spokesman of our ecological and political emergencies. In the post-Covidian times when we have moved on from the pandemic, we should still think about the conflicts the pandemic had directed us to and left us in: conflicts between nation state and people; between countries; and between ideologies. Certain narratives are created to serve people’s need for an enemy. In this work, through embodying bats and sparrows, I found a good entry to the political engagement as an artist and researcher. These species provide materials to understand the causes, potentials, dangers, and damages of the hero-villain narratives. And they are the new materials which host resistance of a divided society and the lurking autocracy. The body of the bat, the place embedding so much about liminality, is where we find resolutions to the increasingly polarised world.

“Forceful Catering” is a choreographic and musical performance growing out from the East/Southeast Asian tradition of preparing sticky rice cakes (mochi). The rice pounding utensils become experimental percussion instruments to produce bass beats to the electronic music; the pounding movements develop along the increasing viscosity of the rice. Inspired by the traditional Chinese folklores and rice pounding work songs, this project tries to expand the rice pounding song to contain new narratives reflecting our current urgencies: can a woman’s body become, contrary to a recipient, a giver of forces and penetration? What if fierce acts don’t direct to violence and harm, but a process leading to nourishment and care? How does the transformation of rice translate the cycle and entanglement of birth and death, fertility and decay? The performance brings out a clubbing experience and a catering service to the audience. “Forceful Catering” thrives on feeding the ones who treasure beats and intimacy.

It was my pleasure to design the “Chinees-Indische Restaurant Stickeralbum”, a project of Benjamin Li about his ethnographic research on Chinees-Indisch restaurants in the Netherlands, its development and disappearance, entangled with his personal history and family archive. Having worked on this project for one year and half, I was not only touched by Benjamin’s love, nostalgia, and passion on the topic, but also his daring approach gluing the societal with the personal, the persistence and dedication in his methodology, and eventually the playfulness in the artistic presentation. With “Chinees-Indische Restaurant Stickeralbum”, you can browse through Benjamin’s family archive, read about his research and thoughts, collect, exchange, and play with the stickers that contain a unique selection of the dishes he photographed from over 1200 Chinees-Indische restaurants he visited throughout the years.

Video extract and documentation of performance for my project "Future Dance of Nostalgia" supported by iii production residency 2022. Future Dance of Nostalgia is a dancing game which invites audience to perform the choreography that extracts and abstracts the movements found in the pre-industrial, heavy physical labour, and work songs. Motion tracking technology allows the body movements to be quantified, measured, and evaluated. Historical archives of work songs provide the inspiration for the music that renders the old tales and melodies into clubbing beats that lead the dance.

Through the research on work songs in which singing/chanting helps choreograph the repetitive manual labour, the artist tries to trace out how our moving bodies used to cooperate in the extinct activities of production. video extract and documentation of the performance for the work "Total Body Workout", graduation work 2021. Total Body Workout leads you through a ‘total body’ experience in which history unfolds not in chronological order but in a head-to-toe sequence. How is our body scripted and shaped by the times it lives in? How are national agendas and political ideologies woven into bodily semiotics? How does one’s body memory become an integral part of hegemonic historical narratives? And how do we inhabit a historical and totalised body? Based on nationwide physical exercise routines and mass gymnastic performances in Asia, the Eastern Bloc and the United States, Total Body Workout proposes a recomposition of the existing corporal movements and a reconfiguration of the past in the present. Here and now, we work out the total body.

World Fusion Food Foundry is an invented playground where the artist experiments how food can be an overloaded signifier, a carrier of politics and cultural identities. In the series of performances, the artist tries to combine provocative politician’s language with the act of giving cooking shows, thus to examine the possibility of extracting and isolating rhetorics from action. Growing up in the capital city of China, she has studied the common language of political speeches in schools and the media. There is a mixture of both rejection and fascination to this grandiosity, revolutionist passion and the early communist mania. This work is not merely a satire of such a type of language, but is also about the artist’s attempt to resolve her relationship with this cultural specific rhetorics.

Royal Nail Salon is an on-going project about giving manicure service as an artistic expression and practice. It was initiated on 1st April, 2019, when I hosted a half-day manicure workshop in the art academy. All materials are free to use. The only rule is to only paint nails and choose colours for the other person. Being neither a self-service nor a staff-client service, the nail salon workshop aimed to explore the possibilities of interactions happening in a get-together spot. The idea of Royal Nail Salon is to bring the”non-art”, the “mundane” and “service” to art spaces or the academic context. It is an attempt to break boundaries and to provide a platform for queerness, bodily intimacy, and alternative storytelling.

"Yes sir, I can boogie." — a 80s hit disco song by a Spanish female duo Baccara got viral in Europe back in the days. While showing a woman's perspective in the song, the single is written by Frank Dostal and Rolf Soja, and produced by Soja — who are all MEN. Before the production of the song and the fame, the duo were spotted by Leon Deane, the record company's manager — who is also MAN. And in those video clips of live performance, you will see that MEN are the major audience and the ones that enjoy the song. This illustrates the female role in the music(and a lot more) industry — being qualified, designed and sold — as a doll in a package. And the money goes to men. Two ladies were dressed up, twisting their bodies stiffly on the stage — you wonder if they enjoyed themselves, maybe it's a yes. But who ever cared? Who ever asked them? I re-performed this song and would like to show the women's reversed role: being the initiative, and the agency itself: being able to design the stage and choose my audience. Being sexy, because I want to, not from someone else's force. Being loud: Yes sir, I can boogie. Because I want to say so, not because you ever want to hear that.

2024Lowlands Festival Biddinghuizen, Nederland This summer, you won't only find us at NDSM, but we're also shaking things up in Biddinghuizen during Lowlands! Together with artists Mette Sterre and Kexin Hao, we've put together a series of specially developed performance programs. The dance lesson that stays in your body forever. When you hear music, you want to dance, and every music genre has its own movements. They knew this in Mao's China too. Political slogans were set to music, and specific maneuvers were paired with them. This way, the ideology literally imprinted itself on your body. China-born Kexin Hao explores in 'Total Body Workout' how muscle memory is shaped by the era you live in. Feel free to join in her aerobics class. You can always leave the class, but will the class ever leave you? Daily at 20:30 and 22:45 at X-Ray. www.nieuwdakota.com/en/news/nieuw-dakota-goes-lowlands/ Groep

2024On Point Of Climax Instrument Inventors Initiative The Hague, Nederland The ideologies we live in creep into the core of our beings and direct how we activate our bodies, where we address attention and how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Human senses are biased: they are reflections of our conscious and unconscious understandings of our existence in the environment. Curated by Elena Apostolovski. Julia Sterre Schmitz’s documentary film Come Here, Come Here invites (self)discovery of a 12cm organ left out of anatomy books and science discourse, as well as the general knowledge, until 1998. Stephanie Pan develops a feminist manifesto containing vocal gestures, discovering How To Not Know she suggests ways of being and creating while trusting the body, leaning on intuition and celebrating emotionality, vulnerability, and empathy. Kexin Hao with Forceful Catering transforms the rice-pounding utensils into experimental percussion instruments that produce bass beats to electronic music; while blending the public and domestic space she reclaims the act of penetration. A Women’s Day program that honours and encourages intuition, action, and (self)discovery. Which sensations do we allow ourselves to have and how to express them, which knowledge do we lean on? It is a challenge to navigate what inputs to trust among scientific books, classical paintings, pop songs or Instagram ads. On Point of Climax searches for tactics and tools art can offer to explore female bodies and extend the ways of how the body can be activated. Duo

2023Evidence in Motion #5: Empty Orchestra The Hague, Nederland An exploration of intercultural and interspecies understandings through karaoke and visual storytelling. How do we communicate across the boundaries of one’s own understanding? This is what Kexin Hao, Maja Simišić, Tuana Inhan, Gabi Dao aim to uncover during Evidence in Motion #5: Empty Orchestra through using karaoke and visual storytelling and time-based media as a way to create multi-layered narratives that connect us with our environment. Within their works, the artists give our favourite cringe-worthy pastime a makeover, by using it as a vessel to tell stories that bridge intercultural and interspecies boundaries. Through reappropriating the aesthetics of singing, dance, and strange background videos, they create interactive experiences that allow us to change our own perspective. Empty Orchestra creates a stage for these explorations to come to life and amplify the voice of “the other”. Creating a safe space to express and change perspectives, that embraces the imperfect just as karaoke does. Inspired by pop cultural references, the artists are revealing the stigma of being a pest from bats and follow their journey as an endangered species, to exploring the peculiar connections that humans have to house plants as aesthetic objects in artificial environments, to creating platonic pseudo love songs for immigration immigration lawyers. Reimagining the project space of iii as a otherworldly and multifaceted karaoke club for everyone – human and more-than-human. instrumentinventors.org/post/evidence-in-motion-5-photos/ Groep

2023AFFECT, final presentation WORM x Amarte Residency WORM Rotterdam, Nederland The four month residency started out through an open call for developing a site-specific, interdisciplinary project. Three makers (individual or collective) were selected, each developing on preexisting ideas, and using the space to expand the possibilities inherent in their creative practices. October 14th, the public had the opportunity to witness these projects, in a continuous flow from one space to the other. Starting at S/ash gallery, moving onto the foyer and finishing at UBIK, each project made use of site-specific conditions of WORM becoming a collaboration between the artist and the possibilities of the space. AFFECT invites the audience as witness to the ongoing journey of these projects. As we pass through the multiple spaces of WORM, we reflect on our body, senses and collective presence in the room. The artists have worked separately throughout residency period, but the final coming together of these works marks the emergence of new thematic connections and artistic entanglements. worm.org/2023/11/14/worm-x-amarte-lookback-affect/ Groep

Liminal Wild: live CBK Rotterdam Rotterdam, Nederland howkexin.com/project/liminal-wild-live.html The research focuses on bats (in the coronavirus crisis) and sparrows (in the “eradicate 4 pests” hygiene campaign in China’s Great Leap Forward) as carriers of symbolism and materials for personification in relation to political narratives in national health agenda, and how it reflects our understanding of ecology and immunity. The outcome is a performance combining music, spoken words, singing (rap) and movements encrypting the research outcomes and using human bodies as sites for metaphors to reenact the bodies of bats.

Based on nationwide physical exercise routines and mass gymnastic performances in Asia, the Eastern Bloc and the United States, Total Body Workout proposes a recomposition of the existing corporal movements and a reconfiguration of the past in the present. Here and now, we work out the total body. Royal Nail Salon Den Haag, Nederland howkexin.com/project/royal-nail-salon The idea of Royal Nail Salon is to bring the”non-art”, the “mundane” and “service” to an art environment and context and to break the boundaries. And I want to build an “immediate” community and a platform for storytelling, intimacy and queerness with people. Royal Nail Salon has grown big and into different collaboration. Me and Yusuf invented our special service “Tarot and Nails”. We ask our customer to pick 10 cards by their 10 fingers. Yusuf read the cards and I painted the nails of the fingers according to my interpretation of the reading. Colour, glitter and pattern have become metaphorical and esoteric. 2023worm rotterdam Rotterdam, Nederland WORM & Amarte Foundation team up to provide an amazing opportunity for Netherlands-based creatives who are interested in an interdisciplinary way of working! Residency is about site specific work in one of our three spaces: our black box theatre space, UBIK, our white cube gallery space, WORM Gallery or our radio station, Radio WORM. We support artists who either create new work or whose work is in a development stage. This opportunity supports musicians, writers, audio-visual makers, tik tok producers, make-up artists, photographers, designers, producers, performers, choreographers, teachers, activists and digital artists, installation makers, radio makers and others who are ready to make site specific work using WORM’s facilities. We welcome any artistic practice who is ready to combine disciplines. Interdisciplinary: Professional makers combining different disciplines within the project. The disciplines represented in the project have an equal artistic position. This means a fusion of disciplines takes place in which a new artistic language is jointly developed. worm.org/2023/09/21/kexin-hao/

2022iii (Instrument Inventors Initiative) Den Haag, Nederland iii commissioned a new work for Kexin Hao’s residency, ‘Future Dance of Nostalgia’, which explores ancient human activities of production in the form of an interactive dance game and as an investigation into the human body as an archive. Through the research on work songs in which singing/chanting helps choreograph the repetitive manual labour, the artist tries to trace out how our moving bodies used to cooperate in the extinct activities of production. From here she questions: how do we preserve the body movements and restore our moving bodies as the living archives? Can we restore it on this body of you and me, now and here? Future Dance of Nostalgia is a dancing game which invites audiences to perform the choreography that extracts and abstracts the movements found in the pre-industrial, heavy physical labour, and work songs. Motion tracking technology allows the body movements to be quantified, measured, and evaluated. Historical archives of work songs provide the inspiration for the music that renders the old tales and melodies into clubbing beats that lead the dance. Through ethnographic research into work songs and the moving body, the project draws much needed attention to alternative historical archives of our times. The gaming technology, visual, and music, bring people closer to the past through a tangible and modern experience. The work also brings fun and togetherness to audience through public participatory dance sessions and interactive gameplay. Collaborators: Leonardo Scarin (game development), Ludmila Rodrigues (choreography), Rachwill Breidel (music), Pedro Gossler (videography, 3D), and Dima Ibrahim (sound mixing). 2024Chinees-Indisch Restaurant Stickeralbum Benjamin Li Rotterdam, Nederland It was my pleasure to design the “Chinees-Indische Restaurant Stickeralbum”, a project of Benjamin Li about his ethnographic research on Chinees-Indisch restaurants in the Netherlands, its development and disappearance, entangled with his personal history and family archive. Having worked on this project for one year and half, I was not only touched by Benjamin’s love, nostalgia, and passion on the topic, but also his daring approach gluing the societal with the personal, the persistence and dedication in his methodology, and eventually the playfulness in the artistic presentation. With “Chinees-Indische Restaurant Stickeralbum”, you can browse through Benjamin’s family archive, read about his research and thoughts, collect, exchange, and play with the stickers that contain a unique selection of the dishes he photographed from over 1200 Chinees-Indische restaurants he visited throughout the years. work credits: Concept, photography and text: Benjamin Li Research and editorial: Benjamin Li & Ka-tjun Hau Text edit and English translation: Renske Vos Chinese translation: Yen-ting Kuan Book design: Kexin Hao Webdesign: Xiaoyuan Gao & Marie Madonna Assistance: Junhao Xiang, Tyler Chan & Lianne Smit Printing: NPN Drukkers www.chinees-indisch-restaurant-stickeralbum.nl/ Uitgevoerd

2023campaign design for KABK Graduation Show & Open Day 2023 KABK, The Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague The Hague, Nederland In 2023 me and Daniele Formica designed the campaign for 2023 Graduation Show and 2023 Open Day at Royal Academy of Art The Hague. We facilitated a one-day drawing workshop for students to gather and draw collectively a centipede that could represent the indentity of their academy. This centipede then evolved into a butterfly for the Open Day campaign. I want to share our design and more importantly the process behind it. We liked the design, but we loved more the mess we made! Design can be so much about collective hands that flap the butterfly’s wings. howkexin.com/project/kabk-campaign.html Uitgevoerd

2021Fake Chinese Isabel Wang Pontoppidan Amsterdam, Nederland “Fake Chinese” is the thesis of Isabel Wang which forms the central and theoretical body or her work. It’s been such a fruitful, collaborative and intense process since I got on the journey of making the publication. I am glad that we could learn from each other, not only from the artistic practices, but also from out own (overlapping, conflicting, interestingly intertwined) identities and personal experiences. Using the strokes in Chinese characters to construct English letters, patterns, and re-construct Chinese, the design attempts to form a mockery of the daily cultural appropriation we’ve seen, but has evolved into something of a bitter-sweetness. howkexin.com/project/fake-china.html Uitgevoerd

2020It is very difficult to be an island of perfection in a sea of misery, but please do not doubt our sincerity W139 Amsterdam, Nederland The group exhibition initiated by Simon Wald-Lasowski for W139 explores themes of digestion, bodily cravings, erotic grotesque nonsense, sex as a matrice of power and the commodification of pleasure. The design is a resolution to my cravings on commodified design, overdosing found styles and elements, obsession of hoarding and displaying, and an unleashed show-off on the excess. howkexin.com/project/w139 Uitgevoerd

--Creep's Garden of Eden Maastricht What do you see if you zoom in onto the canvas' corners of the classical depiction of Garden of Eden? You see insects, undergrowth, all kinds of crawlies creeping under the creatures above. This drawing imagines that these "creeps" are the main characters of Garden of Eden. It is also an amplified impression of my life and friends at Jan van Eyck academy as I am, through immersing and inspiring myself day by day in the garden, embodying the horny fly, the ecstatic mouse, and, a pink little flower feeling so ready to squirt my pollen and then crunched dead by the snail on a same day! The drawing has been adapted into a poster for the Jan van Eyck party under the series of "Dragana Bar" organised by Warsaww-based Collective Kem.

2023Future Dance of Nostalgia, preserving history through dance Magazine Neural Magazine Italië neural.it/2023/03/future-dance-of-nostalgia-preserving-history-through-dance/ There is a whole history of dancing as a competitive game, from the early ‘Dance Dance Revolution’ to the popular ‘Just Dance’, where a machine is quantifying and then evaluating players’ moves. The physical involvement of the player and the use of memory to store the sequence of moves is what dance has always been about. In Future Dance of Nostalgia, Kexin Hao develops a dancing game where players have to re-enact the movements of ‘pre-industrial, heavy physical labour, and work songs’. The body becomes then a place for memory, where the re-enacted movements preserve an important and easily forgotten social history. Commissioned by iii, the work performs public gestures, and the performance enables mechanisms close to oral culture, mediating and personally recording information, to be shared in the future.

2021The Next Generation 2021 continued… Website Jyni Ong London, Verenigd Koninkrijk www.itsnicethat.com/features/the-next-generation-2021-continued-200921 Every year we receive hundreds of brilliant applications from emerging creatives as part of our annual showcase highlighting fresh talent, The Next Generation (formerly known as The Graduates). We were so impressed, we’ve decided to celebrate an extra 19 candidates as part of a longlist of creative excellence. Below, you’ll find a myriad of stories from all over the world and across a range of discipines. It’s the cherry on top of The Next Generation 2021, meeting those who were just a stones throw away from the showcase. That being said, it’s worth mentioning that this list is just a handful of exceptional creative talent we witnessed this year and there were many more people we would have loved to spotlight. From investigative documentary photography to tongue-in-cheek Juicy Couture urns, a self-taught illustrator expressing her depression, sculptural dolls exploring nightlife as a queer person and much, much more; meet The Next Generation continued.

2021Nominee iii Research Residency Award iii Den Haag This year for the first time iii awards the iii Research Residency Award to a fresh graduate of the Royal Academy of Art. The winner will be invited for a 4 week residency at iii workspace, which includes a fee of €2000 and a production budget of €1000. iii is an artist run, community platform supporting new interdisciplinary practices linking performance, technology and the human senses. Founded by alumni of the ArtScience Interfaculty and Institute of Sonology in 2013, iii has been supporting new graduates each year from the start. Since 2021 iii has obtained recognition from the Municipality of The Hague and the Creative Industries Fund NL in the form of structural funding and is therefore able to offer stronger support to artists undergoing the delicate transition between studies and profession. We see strong potential for future development in the work of Cemre Kara that we are eager to support through the residency program of iii. We also need to mention the two other nominees for the award, Kexin Hao with Total Body Workout for bringing joy to the authoritarian image of the healthy body at a time in which it is very much needed, and Leonardo Scarin for taking two things we don’t usually like, a VR headset and quarantining, and combining them in the poetic and beautiful experience that is Variations on a Remote Room.
