There is a continuous movement, a driving force toward one side and then the other, circling around an unattainable central-point. When I approach points of interest, something always eludes itself, what I am aiming to reach moves away from me. What I desire to know turns out more complex than I anticipated, forcing me to take a step back to see things in relation with each other. It is just as my mother described in her notebook when I was an infant: “Nele is crawling backwards, which means that she is moving away from the things she wants to approach.” It was late in the afternoon, when I arrived. A decent layer of snow, covered the small town. The surrounding landscape had been swallowed by mist and darkness. From my bedroom window, I was told I could see the all encompassing mountains – all I looked up to was an apparent emptiness. (adapted from Franz Kafka’s Das Schloss) Some clarities only come to me, when I am observing in a very specific situatedness – it is in those moments that I experience things in their totality. I have read that at a certain age an infant starts to experience their separatedness from the world around them. They are forming an idea of an ‘I’, all of a sudden a border around themselves arises, sensing that they are situated within a separate body. Before, everything appears as one big mesh. 1 Moving away from things, does not bring me to an end of my wandering – it solidifies a perpetually changing in-between. Different sides and points appear, revealing transitions and gradients that I relate to through the created distance. Situating the things I am looking at and sensing their entangled relations clarifies and muddles at the same time. The awe I am experiencing leaves me torn between wanting to know and feeling not knowledgeable enough to even be where I already am standing. January 2023

'Unstable Ground' is a continuation of an ongoing research that started with the video 'Platform'. The two videos are an experimental way for Nele Brökelmann to get in touch with the materiality of her conceptual research and explore the different perspectives she cannot reach through writing. Nele started this video series during her research residency at Witte Rook in Breda, which was made possible with the support of Stroom Den Haag.

installation view at the Destination Unknown 2021 exhibition (11a. book): Upon moving from A to B, you enter a state of being in-between, guided by a map through parallel regions. Wandering under diffused light, it is unclear what passes through, and when the map fails you markers appear around you. What do you see, where do you go, which of them to follow? Every now and then you pause, taken in by odd details breaking through the order of things - being lost feels different. 11a. book 11b. found object 11c. marker 11d. marker 11e. marker

Platform | noun, often attributive Can a platform encourage us to wander through the non-linear layers of the world? “How do we experience the world? Our human cognition creates categories and anchor points to navigate mentally and physically through our surroundings. A category creates distance, in order for us to observe events and others ‘outside’ of ourselves. A platform usually serves the same purpose, but could we turn it around? Taking a platform as a chance to create distance to events and (non)human beings in order to observe our own role in the co-action? It would create a turn away from subtracting ourselves toward immersion. Our experiences would become part of the different modes of being in the world. This is not an easy task, theoreticians as Deleuze & Guattari, Donna Haraway and Bruno Latour have already bent their heads around it – is there a playful approach, one we can enact together? As an act of wandering has the capacity to fill us with joy of discovery and bringing us in resonance with the world, we can start teaching ourselves to be open for encounters, anticipating that we will be changed by them.” I would like to invite you to wander through the world with awe. – Nele Brökelmann This video is shown during the process presentation at Witte Rook Breda, 9-15 november 2020. I am sharing thoughts and sketches in the form of a video essay I made during the first period of my research residency at Witte Rook in October and November. This video essay is projected from 9 till 15 November on the downstairs window of Witte Rook, and hopefully animates your strolls through the surroundings. After a short break I will return, in November and December, to further develop what I have started. I see this residency as a chance to establish a long-term research trajectory that you will be able to follow from 9 November on a designated part of my website. http://nelebrokelmann.com/platform.html This research residency is made possible with kind support of STROOM Den Haag in the form of research subsidy.

Set relates to the aspect of putting differences together, both physically and virtually. Placing objects or concepts into sets is a tool to make sense of the world. Dit resulteert in een tentoonstelling met de titel: “I'll just keep trying different combo's of film and lenses till I find one that works in this dust!” They are developing a toolkit that can be utilized to transform the way we conceptualize, reason and act. Taking the concept of 'Hydrofeminism' (Astrid Neimanis) as a starting point, they are aiming to dissolve sharp boundaries and (re-)connect the separated spheres of leisure/work, private/public, reciprocity/extraction, factual/symbolic. In the (en-)acting of 'hydro-logic', Nele and June see a potential to understand ourselves as 'watery-beings', and thus make tangible that we are all connected and have a certain response-abilty to each other and everything around us.

2023KH Messen Ålvik, Noorwegen What lies inbetween two parallel points/parallel lines/fjords? This is a speculative question, because I will never be able to reach the central-point of what I desire to know. In 2017, incited by a ‘Patafysica class during my Master studies, for the first time the gap solidified itself as an interest of mine. An uncanny feeling arose: when approaching points of interest, something will always elude itself. Thus I started to investigate through analytical drawings from which the ongoing research Unstable Ground developed. Ålvik is located at the Hardangerfjord. I see this body of water as a physical and experiential case study of the gap. The fjord, with the closest ferry in Kvanndal on a 12km distance and no bridge in the proximity of Ålvik, provides an unsurmountable distance that I am eager to explore. How do I experience this physical gap and what might solidify in that, at least to me, unknowable territory? Being in Ålvik during the winter months will add a layer of fragility and temporality to my research, since the natural forces of the season unveil the limitations of the human body and of forcing our human structures and ideas on our environment. This residency was made possible with the financial assistance of the European Union. I love you - Or how I learned to love power structures Boek Self Published Nele Brökelmann Den Haag, Nederland www.dropbox.com/s/k3ibebrc7ko7vn6/NeleBrokelmannMMArtScienceThesis.pdf?dl=0 ArtScience Master Thesis: Humans intrinsically strive for continuity and coherence. Our realities are dynamic as they change as we receive, filter and imagine, to precede cognitive dissonance. The fear of meaningless voids forms the motor for the brain to create linear story-lines from experiences and information. In this thesis I argue that the created linearity makes it difficult to step out of line and change social structures. 2021DU - podcast: Aflevering 6 - DU 2021 met Nele Brökelmann Website Valerie van Holten for Destination Unknown Tegelen, Nederland open.spotify.com/episode/5umSfxyah0J0jfxnFu9t9T Deze podcast gaat over het werk: "Difference across Distance" door Nele Brökelmann. "With this Unstable Ground iteration, I am inviting you to encounter our human worldly entanglement and reflect on how categorisation systems influence our ways of knowing/experiencing. Difference across Distance started as a speculative field research during the Destination Unknown Residency 2021 and is based on the different parallel (un-)natural border regions around Tegelen (NL): the river Meuse, the highway A73, the state-border between the Netherlands and Germany, and the forest, heathland and moorland of the Brachter Wald on the German side. By walking along and crossing these border regions, I investigated the subtle traces of how they evolve with and through one another. Field Research Trips: FR #1 – 22.07.2021: walking along the river Meuse after the weekend of the floods, crossing it by highway-bridge and ferry FR #2 – 23.07.2021: walking along the German‐Dutch and Brachter Wald border, from Swalmen to Venlo FR #3 – 21.08.2021: crossing borders, walking from Swalmen (NL) to Brüggen (DE) along the border of the Brachter Wald, and back through the Brachter Wald Alongside the walks and their documentation in photographs, writings and drawings, I have been reading into Lynn Margulis’ theory of Endosymbiosis in parallel with the reading of Bruno Latour’s An Inquiry into Modes of Existence. Biologist Margulis developed the theory of Endosymbiosis to describe the cooperativeness of inter- special relations, departed from the competitive framing. The way biological entities evolve and sustain by changing with and through one another, intrigues me. Latour emphasises that the different domains in our Western societies, as politics, law, science, and religion, are no different, and proposes ways to rethink these categories to give room to experience the world relationally." - Nele Brökelmann (2021) Living beings “are open systems, organized by the energy and materials that incessantly flow through us.” – Acquiring Genomes, Margulis & Dorion, 2003, p. 45

2023#4 The Gap Culture Moves Europe Ålvik, Noorwegen What lies inbetween two parallel points/parallel lines/fjords? The views expressed herein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union.

2022The Water That Moves You Gemeente Rotterdam Rotterdam, Nederland The Water that Moves You by waterybeings looks at the past, present and future of the New Waterway Canal (Nieuwe Waterweg). The sound-walk and accompanying riso-printed booklet play with possible scenarios of living with water. The sound-walk guides the listener along the Maas in Rotterdam starting from the Erasmus Bridge and ending at the Willems Bridge. To take this sound-walk you need to bring a pair of comfortable weatherproof headphones and download the Echoes app on your smartphone. The echoes app allows audio-tracks to be triggered by geolocation, which is essential for our sound-walk.

2021The Water That Moves You Droom en Daad Rotterdam, Nederland waterybeings research: Like many cities in the world, Rotterdam has an intimate relationship with water: nourished, protected and connected by the river (Maas, Rotte). Unlike many other cities, Rotterdam was once the world’s largest industrial harbor. Together with its development bore the cultural identity of hard-workers that was once shared among many Rotterdammers. Just as the river changes its course, the cultural narrative and daily experience of people that are constantly mediated by the city’s water bodies are changing too. For this project, we want to investigate and (re-)narrate this relationship through a survey of historical changes, feld-trips, mappings, and artistic experimentation to illustrate different aspects of living with and through water in Rotterdam. This will result in an online exhibition, a (interactive) walk along the river or a public workshop (depending on the COVID restriction).

2020Can a platform encourage us to wander through the non-linear layers of the world? PRO Onderzoek, Stroom Den Haag Witte Rook, Breda, Nederland When events happen one after the other in close proximity our minds draw connections (Naomi Klein, On Fire, p. 44), applying visual and emotional cues that serve as anchor points. In the act of unconsciously connecting the anchor points, the framework for our reality develops – an (individual) experience of the world. I am deeply intrigued how we project our experiences onto the world, as we learn to recognize ourselves in the reflections of a mirror. The act of projection is one-directional, and keeps us from forming a relation that is based on reciprocity and transformation, which would bring us in resonance with others and the world. A meaningful relationship entails “the subject's experience of some Other calling upon it, which requires understanding or answering but also has the ability to change the subject.” (Hartmut Rosa, The Future of the New: Beyond the Echo Chamber, p.25) Humans desire to be in resonance, which becomes most apparent when we alter our own stories and retell them with other stories: called Serious Denormalization by Donna Haraway. It is an act of allowing an others‘ story to change one’s own, and thereby shifting the connections of the established framework of anchor points. For the research residency at Witte Rook, I want to take the act of retelling our own stories as a starting point to look into the moment when our framework of reality shifts – the brief moment when we are in resonance. Since my Master I have done research into cognitive psychology, non-linear storytelling, and meaning-making and (human) perceptions of the world. I discovered that linear storytelling is one expression of our minds drawing connections, filtering out the parts that do not seem to make sense. By categorizing what we are experiencing, we create coherence and the anchor points through which we ‘know’ the world and ourselves. I will look into different ways in which I can translate the relationships between the stories we tell and the non-linear layers of the world. Such as writing texts, making analytical drawings, and experimenting with (physical) material layering. I will incorporate my research findings experimentally into my website through creative coding.
