Katerina Sidorova

I'm Katerina Sidorova, a visual artist and researcher based in The Hague, Netherlands. Working with installation, performance, and text, I explore multiple facets of mortality and necropolitics in my practice. My artistic interests lie within the themes of death beyond human-centrism, representation of state power, and the performativity of non-democratic political regimes. I'm equally fascinated by cyclical ecologies, radical death acceptance, creating space for grief and practices of resistance. Particularly engaged in exploring societal hierarchies, mythologies, staging, and performativity as a political strategy, I seek to understand how mortality reverberates on all levels of human and more-than-human experience, from the intimate and personal to the grand dynamics of power between the state and its population. At the liminal point where sculptural meets theatrical, I work to create environments that serve as platforms for performative actions, curation, experimentation, collaboration, and improvised installations. Bringing the materiality and reuse of vernacular objects and historical artifacts to a higher tier by weaving them into a multilayered storylines contained in each installation. By embracing imperfection as a method I bring performative action to collaborative studio/gallery/storage spaces that I create. My works are imbued with the notion of inevitable decay, crafted predominantly from natural materials that are likely to change their state over time.
