Negative October Salon (Overtime Boycott) is a work developed in the context of the 59th October Salon. Using the Negative Poetry software the work proposes negated (inverted) versions of the opening/statement texts of October salons since its establishment in 1960 to today. All negative translations stand on a vector axis. How one chooses to translate a word into its opposite is dependent on which aspect of the thing signified you want to invert. In this case, October is inverted to Overtime, on the axis of time demarcated. October has a duration of a month and happens in the period of autumn and overtime signifies a period of time without set duration, except for the one that is in addition to the regular working time. Similarly, salon is translated from the axis of coming together and so its negative became boycott as a sign of refusal and withdrawal from commercial or social relations. Although still often happening in togetherness, boycotts are concerted acts for revolt and not for amusement or knowledge exchange.

www.negativepoetry.com Negative Poetry is an experiment in language, part of an ongoing research into creative processes, language and the concept of Origin. The work centers around the entanglement of matter and meaning by focusing on the intriguing and paradoxical concept of zero - that which is both something and nothing at the same time. The idea for this work comes from the mathematical concept of approaching zero and the concept of cancellation where -n and n result in 0. In calculus, if we want to find the value of an essentially indeterminate form - zero - we try to approximate it by finding its ‘nearby’ values. We can thus approach zero from positive and/or negative direction and the resulting limit of each equation approaches different infinities (∞ and-∞) as it gets closer and closer to 0. The key question is can the same be applied to natural language? The research consists of two experimental setups - the Negative Poetry Machine Algorithm, a custom made software that translates the Bible into its negative using the database of the Oxford English Dictionary, and the Negative Poetry Human Algorithm, a live online performance made of nine people and developed in collaboration with Orion Maxted and The Interactions group - a trans-disciplinary thought-band consisting of roughly 20 artists and scientists investigating self-organization and collective intelligence, hosted by the Institute for Advanced Studies, University of Amsterdam.

NEGATIVE POETRY : Machine Algorithm is a custom made software that translates the Bible into its negative using the database of the Oxford English Dictionary. Negative Poetry is current research and work in progress by Katarina Petrovic exploring the possibility of approaching zero through language. The work centers around the entanglement of matter and meaning by focusing on the intriguing and paradoxical concept of zero – that which is both something and nothing at the same time. It is an experiment in language, part of an ongoing research into creative processes, language and the concept of origin. Software written by Miloš Grujić.

Cosmologicus is a generative installation in which the radio emissions from Jupiter are translated into language as a form of an automated poetry. An invisible order of electron particles coming from a distant planet, a kind of a message coming from the mythological Jupiter, is deciphered with the use of the Lexicon Liber Novus book and its word-number database. The signal is obtained from NASA’s amateur radio community Radio Jove, and analysed by measuring the amplitude, that is the strength of the signal. Subsequently, the sampled numerical values are linked to the corresponding words in the Lexicon database, resulting in a semiotic stream. Sculpted as a quatrain, the stream is then projected into the black water cube and the original audio recording can be heard on the headphones.

The interactive installation Lexicon Liber Novus v.2.0 consists of several modular structures and parts: generic book and software, diagrams - prints on glass and pure carbon. Lexicon Liber Novus is an algorithmically generated book that starts with a verse from the first of the Two English Poems written by Jorge Luis Borges in 1934. “We talked and you have forgotten the words.” Following a rule that every word is unknown, the algorithm indexes and explains all the words in the given sentence, all the words in the explanations, all the words in those explanations and so on. First word in the verse starts with an assigned reference to number one, second word to number two and as a new, unindexed word comes up - within the definitions of previously indexed words, it gets the next natural number assigned in order to be explained as well.

The Origin is a prototype and an experiment, part of an ongoing research on the notion of cosmogony and creation. The work explores the properties of sound in low pressure environments. It is an acoustic feedback system consisting of a speaker and a microphone embedded in a glass sphere. The container is being periodically vacuumed from atmospheric pressure (1 Atmosphere or 0 kPa) to almost zero (-0,83 Atm or -85 kPa). In the process of slow leakage of air, the sound generated in the feedback loop exhibits strange and fascinating properties that are yet to be fully explored. This project was produced as part of the Summer Sessions Network for Talent Development in a co-production of MoTA, Ljubljana and V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media, Rotterdam, with support of the Creative Industries Fund NL.

Investigating the sound properties in low pressure or vacuum environments - this work deals with the relationships of sound and space, sensation and creation. The work Origin is made up of acoustic feedback loop, i.e. speakers and microphones built into the glass sphere, which produce a continuous tone or frequency. The chamber is vacuumed periodically, from atmospheric pressure to two atmospheres less, and in the process of slow air leakage back inside the sphere, the sound shows unusual and fascinating characteristics.

Using the order of natural numbers for indexation and arrangement of contents, and an Oxford English Dictionary as a source of word definitions, the book encompasses 47.152 indexed words and more then 2 million processed words overall. Therefore, in order to explain the first 8 words, 47.144 other words needed to be explained as well. Spiral or causal arrangements of the contents means the book can be seen as a self-contained world where every point is intrinsically connected to every other. From 1956 to 1967 my grandparents lived and worked in Priština, Kosovo. I have collected my grandmother’s memories and her photographs of the period. Some of their personal memories were then re-performed by the photos taken at the time of The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. I was invited to participate in the Hub for Serbia-Kosovo Cultural Exchange program, organized by the Alternative Cultural Center and Center for Peace and Tolerance from Gračanica, Kosovo in October 2013.. Given the specific environment, socio-political situation of the region and the problems Serbia and Kosovo are facing today, I decided to do a performance that would address the entanglement of past and present in hyperspatial sense. In relatively stabile societies unencumbered by past history and memory are more distinct then in the societies of crisis, burdened by past and retaliation. The history and memory intertwine and even merge beyond recognition in the societies of permanent crisis. [Pierre Nora]

Exhibition Danse Macabre consists of a two-channel video and sound installation, photographs and an audio recording. The two-channel video represents unedited documentary materials set side by side. The video on the left channel of the installation shows the burning fields, while the video on the right shows a slaughter of a lamb. This installation with sound makes a distinct narrative in which the footages and audio are played in their own separate loops, thus never creating the same arrangement or reading. Burning fields after harvest is a regular practice in the rural Serbia. It is a way of clearing the hay and preparing the fields for winter and the upcoming growing season. Lamb was ordered and purchased by my father from a local grower and butcher, to commemorate the fortieth day of his mother’s death. Serving lamb or sheep meat on one of the most important commemorations is a common practice in southern Serbia. This custom is called Dušni brav and it represents a form of sacrifice for the soul of the deceased, namely ensuring soul’s peaceful rest. The recording was made in the courtyard of the butcher’s family house in a village near Niš. Both burning of the fields and domestic killing of animals for food are old, common and illegal practices, yet present throughout Serbia to this day. Sound following the two-channel video installation is composed of whisper and repetition of my grandmother’s words, from my mother’s side, followed by a background noise. My grandmother’s original speech can be heard on the headphones and it represents an audio recording made secretly during one afternoon visit to her apartment. She is 83 today.

it is the reflection of a profound reality; it masks and denatures a profound reality; it masks the absence of a profound reality; it has no relation to any reality whatsoever; it is its own pure simulacrum. [Jean Baudrillard, The Divine Irreference Of Images - Simulacra and Simulation, 1981] Seeing the virtual world as the mirror image of the reality, I tried to transpose the actuality of one side to the other. Using my body, that is my visual representation, I have placed the user inside of the screen on which it spectates and thus changed the sides from experiencing to being experienced. The characters were produced using a built in camera, digitally manipulated and then printed on glass so as to simulate a computer screen. In the transference the characters changed their identity, hence the virtual world itself is the arena of identity exploration. What constituted the characters was mostly the hair, because the hair can be seen as an attribute, a symbol – hair as self. The work bears the name James Blond, since that was and still is the avatar I use online.

Video documented performance shows the process of painting the body with white color in front of the white wall. This piece represents an exploration of the relationship between the body and mind, as well as their synchronization. Object – thought relation has been examined through a physical manipulation of the body, emphasizing the significance of the self-reflective thought.

Each word in the song titles, from the album In Sweden by Charlie Parker, has been dictionary explained. This text has been integrated into the design of the original vinyl record casing and exhibited as a single entity. Semantics have been the framework of my interest in verbal communication and in my work in general. Various meanings that hide behind every word are the ones that shape our world. Infinite meanings of words in various contexts are making language a multi-dimensional software and the most abstract and symbolic human creation. This inseparable part of man I am trying to analyze through semantics and its personal and cultural differences that are constantly re-shaping it.

An hour and 52 minute long video is devised to function as an installation, set up as a painting on the wall. Video shown on a flat screen, framed in a gilded frame and hanged on the wall, aims to translate the duration of the recording into a single image and a single moment. Process of dawning is recorded in a room with a glowing globe and a subject sleeping. The illumination of space gradually obliterates the light of the globe, exposing and revealing the sleeper and the whole scene.

God gives you pleasure is an interactive body suit, made to be worn underneath clothes, on the naked body. Primary designed for women, it is made of a stretch material with built-in touch sensors, placed on the points that are touched when one makes the sign of the cross. Sensors on both shoulders and lover abdomen are connected to four vibrators and a dildo. Sensor on the left shoulder activates vibrators on the left side, stomach and inner side of the left thigh; sensors on the right side are connected in the same manner. Touch sensor on the stomach, on the second point of the making the cross, is connected with dildo. Religious and sexual gratification are united in order to communicate the spiritual through material and to bring forth the dissonance between women, body and religion as well. Work was exhibited at the Touch me Festival / art in the intersection of science and technology in Zagreb, Croatia in 2008. In collaboration with Milan Nenezic
