Puck Verkade

Verkade's videos and installations address concerns of biological and social definitions regarding cultural identity, gender and sexuality. She uses humour and absurdity to draw the viewer into a vortex of multiple considerations and cross references between fiction and fact, by mixing past, present and future perspectives. Breeder (2017) is composed of re-appropriated found footage, sampled pop music, low res animation and personal recordings of medical examinations exposing the process of Verkade’s own life experience to become an egg-donor. The trilogy of video episodes speculate on the entanglement of sexual, social and visual modes of reproduction. At the very basis of this trilogy, and which also underpins Verkade's practice at large, is the attempt to question how she is implicated in perpetuating these intersected forms of reproduction and representation as well. Puck Verkade (1987, The Netherlands) received her BFA from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and recently completed an MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, London. Her work has been shown at various venues, such as Sunday Art Fair (London), LOOP (Barcelona), Art Rotterdam (Rotterdam), and Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (The Hague). Upcoming shows include Queertopia curated by Gemma Roll Bentley / Daata Editions at If so, what? in San Fransisco and a duo show with Durst Britt & Mayhew at Liste Art Fair Basel 2018. Verkade has been selected as a 2017-2018 resident artist at Sarabande: The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation.
