Matteo Marangoni

Matteo Holyoke Marangoni combines music with visual art, theatre, and new technologies. He develops robotic instruments and artificial creatures to compose spaces in which sound is experienced with the whole body and all the senses. His work draws inspiration from animal communication, bioacoustics, and ecoacoustics, exploring how sound can mediate relationships between humans, machines, and other life forms, and proposing embodied and ecological notions of intelligence, consciousness and subjecthood. His work is presented in museums, concert halls, festivals, public spaces, and research contexts in formats ranging from site-specific sound installations, music theatre performances, lectures and workshops. In parallel to his artistic practice, as a community organiser he has initiated grass roots initiatives facilitating cooperation amongst artists and advocating for the position of artists within society. In The Hague he co-founded iii (instrument inventors initiative), an artist-run community platform promoting the field of ArtScience, and WD4X, a cultural incubator providing 2500 m2 of affordable workspaces to artists. His past curatorial work includes Proximity Music, an exhibition programme initiated by iii and Rewire, connecting music, architecture, technology, ritual, and play, and the nomadic performance series No Patent Pending organised with iii.
