A young African from Guinee gets a haircut just outside the C.E.T.I. refugee center (Centro de Estancia Temporal de Inmigrantes) in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in Africa near the border with Morocco. For most asylum seeking immigrants Ceuta is just a stepping stone to mainland Spain and Europe. But once you arrive as an immigrant the way to Europe is blocked, and the immigrants can hardly hide in a little town like Ceuta and seek out for work or a living on their own. Human rights organizations like the Spanish NGO CEAR criticize the Spanish government for misusing Ceuta, and especially the C.E.T.I., as a permanent detention centre. The C.E.T.I. was designed to accommodate around 500 people for a temporary stay. But currently there are more than 1200 migrants in the camp. Rooms are crowded, some immigrants don’t stay days or weeks, but rather months and years. Even if applications for asylum are denied, people have to wait for years in the C.E.T.I too see what is going to happen to them. Under these circumstances it isn’t easy to keep despair at bay. Off the coast of Barbate he and his two friends, also from Senegal got into trouble with their small boat and have been rescued by the Spanish coast guard. He told me he came from Liberia but wandered around Ceuta for many years now. Emmanuelle was clearly neglected and spoke confused. Photo is part of project 'The Myth of the Bridge’.
