The installation "Sunrise" is a room-filling collage with a four-hour live act that can be viewed from the street. The work takes on the outside of reality and exposes the absurdity of our contradictions. Contradictions that suit us just fine. Fortunately, there is the "fortune seeker" as a target. Pulling fiber optic cables, working in horticulture, the meat industry, cleaning offices and factories and other work that the Dutchman does not wish to do, we mostly leave to workers we call "fortune seekers”. The economy demands plenty of these vulnerable workers, but meanwhile we build walls in Europe to keep these people out. Convenient, because low pay and should the economy slow down, these workers can be thrown out on the street without difficulty. This is exactly what one can see when walking in the Haagse Bos and other parks in The Hague. Provided one wants to see it, because a tent in a park also reminds us of our own fun camping vacations.

De muur in mijn atelier bezie ik als een doorlaatbare wand tussen de tastbare wereld en de onbekende mysterieuze wereld van het innerlijk.

Mark van Overeem (1970, Nederland) studeerde in 1995 af aan de Koninklijke Academie in Den Haag. Na een residency in New York spelen grenzen, spiegelingen en herhalingen een terugkerende rol in zijn werk. Het gaat hem om de beleving van grenzen die mensen zichzelf en elkaar opleggen en hij brengt die beleving, die voor iedereen voelbaar maar anders is, over op het publiek. In eerste instantie heeft Van Overeem deze fenomenen onderzocht met olieverf op plaatmateriaal, maar de afgelopen zeven jaar betrekt hij de menselijke omgeving en koppelt daarbij de denkbeeldige, illusoire werkelijkheid aan de tastbare, echte werkelijkheid. De abstracte ruimte tussen de tastbare wereld en de illusionistisch opgeroepen wereld, is een vormentaal die Van Overeem gebruikt om zijn vermoeden van een grotere onbekende ruimte beeldend te verkennen. In zijn ruimtevullende, site specific installaties wordt het door hem opgeroepen beeld gespiegeld. Hiervoor gebruikt hij een mix van fotografie en film en hij past deze media op architectonische schaal toe. In 2013 verbleef Mark van Overeem twee maanden in Israël. Naar aanleiding van zijn verblijf en speciaal voor zijn overzichtstentoonstelling in het GEM Museum voor actuele kunst in Den Haag (2015), maakte Van Overeem de installatie A Wish in Return. In de tentoonstellingszaal van het GEM bouwde hij een tuin zoals de openbare plekken en parken hem in Jeruzalem bij nacht raakten: een apocalyptische wereld waarin alles stil lijkt te staan. Hierbij refererend aan de dreiging van een aardbeving, zoals die in 1927 in Jeruzalem plaatsvond. Binnen deze nachtelijke ruimte in GEM nam de bezoeker zelf deel aan de installatie en werd tegelijkertijd een figurant ten opzichte van de andere bezoekers
