Situation-Specific Performance Art
Tingyi Jiang is an artist and performer based in The Hague. She uses performance as a tool to engage with the world through
her practice, which she calls situation-specific performance. By claiming the ‘situation’ as a stage, appropriating ‘rules’ as scores, and using ‘action’ as material, she transforms implicit social norms into performative acts—blending reality and fiction to explore themes of identity, memory, language, and authority.
At the heart of her work is the concept of ‘fitting’—both as a creative method and a critical lens. This inquiry led to her ongoing series Make It Fit (initiated in 2021), which examines how both individuals and structures of authority navigate to systems through the condition of ‘fit.’ The series spans a range of formats, including theater, interventions, publications, participatory events, performative texts and sound-based works.
Tingyi’s methodology centers on performative scores that offer structure while leaving room for contingency and improvisation. Guided by conceptual rules, the performer’s embodied, responsive presence engages in a live negotiation with the situation.
Her practice is continuously shaped by its context. In response to cultural funding cuts and growing institutional pressures, it becomes a structural experiment in adaptive, sustainable performance-making. Within this framework, ‘fitting’ evolves from an act of submission into a performative negotiation—a space for reclaiming voice, narrative, and presence.
As both a maker and performer, Tingyi has collaborated with various artists and has showcased her work at venues and events such as Fiber Festival, GOGBOT Festival, Korzo Theater, Melkweg Amsterdam, Contour Biennale 10, Teatro Municipal do Porto, ISEA2022, CTM x Athens Epidaurus Festival, This Art Festival, iii workspace, Het Hem, V2_, VIERNULVIER, and Zaal 3 Den Haag.

2022Evidence in Motion iii workspace The Hague, Nederland There is no life without any motion or movement – inspired by this, thespectrum.space creates an interdisciplinary playing field in the form of a curated evening for performative works. The program questions “revolution” as balance and concentric movements by exploring the influence of gravitation in the physical and emotional world. Participating artists and audience explore together what movement and the sensory experiences of motion can be. EVIDENCE IN MOTION offers space for artistic experiments and tryouts for emerging and renewed artists and makers alike. And allows the outcomes to range undefined from being in the process, in-between start and result and up to fully developed, where the audience and artists can find the traces of the ideas proposed through the presented experiments, tryouts, or perhaps fully developed works. In the program thespectrum.space invites artists and makers whose performative work can be found at the intersection of art, science, and society and between contemporary and popular culture. EVIDENCE IN MOTION presents performative works and installations that make us question reality, reconsider the current, and highlights how artists, performers, and audience can move and learn together. The workspace of iii and its underlying philosophy would offer the ideal stage to facilitate experiments of this kind. A space in which different understandings of a topic can emerge and engage with one another, both platforms can enter in a dialog. instrumentinventors.org/agenda/evidence-in-motion/ Groep

2022Traversing Bodies | ArtScience Interfaculty Het HEM Zaandam, Nederland Today traversing can be mentioned in any context; from axial constructions to border passing political actions. As an artist community, ArtScience likes to think in multi-dimensional spaces. During Traversing Bodies they connect Het HEM to transdisciplinary knowledge productions. Between the travelling metal plates of RAAAF, the students of the ArtScience Interfaculty (Royal Academy of Art Den Haag and the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag) will hide soundscapes, play with movement, find installations and enrich collective awareness of (auditory) atmospheres. hethem.nl/en/Het-Hem/Calendar/2022/05/Traversing-Bodies?modal_parent_path=Het-Hem%2FCalendar Groep

Make It Fit ArtScience KABK The Hague, Nederland tingyijiang.art/Make-It-Fit-2 Performance, 20min This piece is a performance, functioning as speech, manifesto, poetry, concert, and ritual. It constructs a theatrical situation through the precise composition of spoken words, live instruments, scenography, and meticulous mechanical enactments. The phrase “Make It Fit” recurs throughout the performance in varying contexts and rhythms. Appropriating the language of propaganda by grotesque chanting, stating disassembling, contextualising, and repeating, language becomes the in-between of sound and sense, signal and noise, narrative and poetry. The impossibility of perfect execution of ‘script’ introduces awkwardness and humor, creating absurdity within the solemn scenario. The self behind the authoritative character gradually emerges, revealing vulnerability beneath the rigorous apparatus an personal memories shaped by collective consensus. Make It Fit explores the performances and performativity of both individuals and authorities within the context of social norms, and examines how these normalized social actions and artistic performances interact. This simple and general yet abstract phrase generates the fictional ideology of “Make It Fit-ism.” It provokes diverse questions: What is fit? How to fit? Why fit? And what types of language and voices can be widely heard in the current society? Make It Fit addresses political urgencies, institutional critique and identity politics. While we search for a 'fitting' way to escape the confines of 'fitting in,’ we also yearn for the security and comfort that ‘fitting’ brings.

Make It Fit - Performing in the Form of a Thesis ArtScience KABK The Hague, Nederland tingyijiang.art/Make-It-Fit-Performing-in-the-Form-of-a-Thesis Performance/Publication This performance is writing a thesis. It is a Situation-Specific Performance where the mandatory graduation requirement is turned into performance art that blends academic research and artistic practice together. By performing ‘what should be performed’ in the context of ‘writing a thesis’, the artist unpacks her personal relationship with language, text, writing, accent, and speech to explore the performances and performativity of both individuals and authorities within the context of social norms, and how these normalised social actions and artistic performances interact with one another.

SCLPT The Hague, Nederland tingyijiang.art/SCLPT A collaborative project between Tingyi Jiang and Dima Ibrahim that remodels the space into a sonic apparatus. Spatial exploration through movement and sound creates a scenario where these two elements listen, illuminate, intertwine, merge, break, and search for balance under the influence of gravity, generating continuous feedback.

Caution Wet Floor Performance KASK Ghent, België tingyijiang.art/Caution-Wet-Floor Cleaning the floor is an act of caring for or maintaining a space; but can it also be aggressive? Can it become a tool to occupy space by leveraging others' respect for this work? Two performers begin cleaning the floor with wet mops from opposite corners of the space, gradually moving towards the center. The area of the wet floor expands, gradually taking over the entire space. The audience's natural reaction to avoid stepping on the wet and clean floor causes them to unconsciously move towards the center of the space. Eventually, the audience is crowded into the center of the room, the only remaining small dry area, surrounded by the wet floor.

LEAVMI ALONE ArtScience KABK The Hague, Nederland tingyijiang.art/LEAVMI-ALONE A deliberate misreading of an IKEA instruction manual resulted in the creation of a dysfunctional chair, a rebellious piece of furniture. When it was placed back in the IKEA showroom with a label identical to the other products, this oddity seemed to blend in seamlessly, going unnoticed by both customers and staff. This piece is a humorous intervention, not much to explain—please leave me alone.

Home, Sick Home ArtScience KABK The Hague, Nederland tingyijiang.art/Home-Sick-Home A hundred-day performance, featuring a hundred days of instant composition through live recording, with a hundred tracks uploaded online daily without post-editing. Exploring the diaspora through sound, from the cultural and political memory of broadcasts to the intimate spaces of my daily activities. This project blends isolated sonic spaces: from state apparatuses to private rooms, from Western public spaces to Eastern musical memories, opening up a new field in-between through performativity. I am listening, living, performing, practicing, and researching within this 'in-between.'

--iii (Instrument Inventors Initiative) Budapest, Hongarije iii have selected 8 young artists to participate in a 10-day residency in the woods outside Budapest before presenting their work in Budapest. During this project, 24 emerging artists represented by three art and technology initiatives from Hungary, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic will be exchanging skills and ideas, work together to create an interactive audio-visual installation, and present this installation at a gallery in Budapest. The main objective of the project is to collectively create an interactive audio-visual device (named ‘kiberdob’) which will help anyone who interacts with it to experience a flow state. During the first half of the project, we will hold workshops and brainstorming sessions intended to inspire participants to join their expertises and design the kiberdob together to be built in the second half of the project. We will finish the project with a performance in Budapest. instrumentinventors.org/agenda/kiberdob-exchange-project-at-paikka/
