Sophie Allerding

There is a saying that if we want to transform the world, we have to change the stories we tell each other. I am an artist, designer, educator and feminist activist with a special interest in storytelling, playing and the creation of spaces of meaningful encounters. I am particularly fascinated by the myths that are weaving together the world we live in. In my practice, I challenge oppressive and destructive narratives that shape our reality, for instance, the superiority of humans over nature, or men over women. I do so through re-telling histories and creating new stories.  Learning from my Latin American ancestors and eco– and cyber-feminist storytellers, I like to raise awareness for the invisible layers in our environment, and make animism sensible, as well as the lively interconnectivity of different entities in our world. I work in a variety of media like photography, film, sound, text, radio, and performance.My enthusiasm lies in challenging the boundaries of mediums when they trigger the perception of an authentic representation of the truth. Collaboration lies at the core of my practice and in addition to my individual work, I am also active in various collective projects. I see my practice as the constant attempt to question identity and reality formation and creating new visions and perspectives on situations. With that I aim to provide healing, ideas, dreams and prophecies for a more equal world among human and other than-human beings. Sophie Allerding holds a B.A. in Communication Design and was a scholarship holder at the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (2019-2022), Germany‘s largest independent organization for the promotion of gifted students. In 2022 Allerding finished her M.FA. in the program Photography & Society at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. Allerding won the German the gute aussichten- young German photography Award 20/21. Her work was exhibited among other sites in Deichtorhallen Museum for photography Hamburg, Landesmuseum Koblenz, in Germany, Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and at the Climate Utopias Festival in Lahti, Finland. Allerding is a member of the feminist collectives POSSY and Radio Echo, both collectives aim to create higher visibility for female, non-binary, trans- and a gender people in the cultural landscape of art and music.
