Echo, Echo is a new art installation at Radius CCA in Delft, a collaboration project by David Habets & Marjet Zwaans about lichen economics. At the heart of Radius’ circular body, the work functions as a set piece to gather, imagine, and reflect upon radical new possibilities for a more just economy. A regenerative installation, able to move from museum, to schools, to municipality, back to the museum. Echo, Echo re-imagines the abstract schemes of ecological economics as a space for reflection and contemplation. Making porous the rigidities of black and white schematics. The fragile paper scrolls sway with people passing by. Through the perforations, the benches are bathed in a porous light. Echo, Echo affords to reflect upon what has disappeared, what has become ungraspable, what has died at the heart of what we call progress. Like aging lichens, we can only grow so big so fast, before having to slow down. Growth and disappearance inevitably go hand in hand.

project of We Are All Extremophiles nitrophiles - jan van eyck academy, maastricht, 2021- experiment with 305 agar agar prints on the windows of the atrium - duration 3 months. Light, space and air flow through the van eyck building. Energy dissipates as if it is in endless supply. The windows are outlined by dark edges against the spotless hygienic white walls of its modern architecture. The glass is thin, as see-through as glass can be. The building is a ruthless substrate of, “what has proven itself by now, a sterile world. It is a blueprint of an age of optimism, that in hindsight looks self-destructive.” It is a substrate on which life sciences accumulate On sheets of glass, covered with sterile see-through gelatines. Affording the growth of a new order. An industry that isolates the natural into nothing more than an output of abstract chemical relations. nitrophiles is an installation made by adding a seemingly insignificant layer onto the windows of the atrium of the academy. A layer as thin as lichens themselves. A living substrate, gelatinous and responsive to the atmosphere of the place. It is the substrate for archival prints of lichen taken in the surroundings of maastricht, embedded in a yellow-orange pigment called parietin.

2024Eco Echo, Echo Eco Radius CCA Delft, Nederland Eco Echo, Echo Eco is a regenerative work meant to move from museum to high school, municipality, and museum. In the heart of Radius’s circular body, the work functions as a set piece to gather, imagine, and interact with radical new possibilities for a more just economy. The written and spoken fragments are meant to ignite a line of thought and reflection. Puncturing possible pathways between economic, ecological, humane, and poetic thoughts that, for us, echo and converse. Like aging lichens, we can only grow so big so fast before having to slow down. Growth and disappearance inevitably go hand in hand. Groep

2024Infinity Pool I Sarno Performance in public space Salerno The infinity pool combines participatory performance with reflective masks, a video installation, and phenomenological research. Through performative means, we explore embodied cognition and disaster landscapes. The first performance of Infinity Pool was developed in July 2024 at the Sarno River, the most polluted river in Europe, which flows between the provinces of Salerno and Naples in southern Italy. The performance was organized in collaboration with the CIRF(centro italiano riqualificazione fluviale) and the Civico Museo Archivio Campagna. The mask was created with the support of Italian sculptor Ivano Troisi at his studio in Montecorvino Pugliano, Salerno, Italy, where the collective gathered for a week-long residency. futuremonsters.org Solo

2021Nitrophiles Jan van Eyck Academie (Atrium) Maastricht, Nederland We Are All Extremophiles - van Eyck Atrium 2021 - period of 3 months - an experiment with 305 agar agar print on the existing windows slowly decaying. The installation was installed and on display for three months in the publicly accessible atrium of the Van Eyck. It was part of a performative work called Nitrophiles I, during the Open Studios of the van Eyck academy in 2021. description: Light, space and air flow through the building of the van Eyck. Energy dissipates as if there is an endless supply, still. The building is outlined by dark edges against spotless hygienic white walls of its modern architecture. Glass is as thin, as see-through, as glass could be. It is a ruthless substrate of, what has proven itself by now, a sterile world. It is a blueprint of an age of optimism, that in hindsight looks self-destructive. It is on this substrate that life sciences and bio-industries accumulate. Glass sheets covered with sterile see-through gelatines afford the growth of a new order in the world. An industry that isolates the natural into nothing more than an output of abstract chemical relations. we are all extremophiles adds a seemingly insignificant layer to the glass substrate of the van Eyck building. As thin as lichen themselves. It is a living substrate, gelatinous and responsive to the atmosphere of the place. It is the substrate for prints of an archive of lichen from the surroundings of Maastricht (the ecology in which the van Eyck is embedded) in yellow orange parietin (extracted from the abundant xanthoria parietina lichen). openstudios2021.janvaneyck.nl/participants/david-habets

2018Hidden Worlds Cappadox Contemporary Art Ortahisar, Turkije Hidden Worlds RAAAF’s fire installation “Hidden Worlds” at Unesco world heritage site Cappadocia. The whole valley is set on fire as part of Cappadox Contemporary Art. Hidden Worlds reflects literally and figuratively the life worlds behind the landscape of Cappadocia. After sunset it shifts the focus from the volcanic landscape to the oppressed ancient cultures that hided in the valleys. Behind the millions of man-made holes in the rocks underground cities are obscured from view. On a timeline of thousands of years, the caves in the valley of Ortahisar just got abandoned very recently: only 40 years ago. Currently most people don’t notice that for centuries this valley was the center of life in Ortahisar. Reflected on the inner cave structures the silent movement of the flames makes one feel the human presence in these ancient hidden worlds. From a distance it deepens the experience of a forgotten city that is brought to life. 2023We Are All Extremophiles I Boek Building Fictions David Habets Amsterdam, Nederland - This book shares the transcript of we are all extremophiles I (performed at the van eyck academy in 2021), photographs of the spatial performance nitrophiles (which slowly decomposed over three months on the atrium windows of the academy), further enriched with research notes and generous reflective insights by laurens sparrius and cameron hu. The publication in your hands is the first in a series, to grow slowly in collaboration with ben schwartz, rudy guedj and countless anonymous lichens. we are all extremophiles will continue to question our capacity to perceive the changes, perils, intentions and unintended consequences written into lichen lifeforms, for 200 hundred years to come.

2021Lithium, states of exhaustion Boek ARQ-ediciones Diaz, Kubark, Otero Verzier. Santiago, Chili www.ideabooks.nl/9789569571886-lithium-states-of-exhaustion The frame of the publication is the essay "the missing mineral" of LiCo. Author F. Diaz ; A. Kubrak ; M. Otero Eds. Publisher Het Nieuwe Instituut / Arq ISBN 9789569571886 Idea Code 21715 Since its discovery, lithium was presented as a cure for the exhaustion that the capitalist economy exerts on bodies. Prescribed since 1817 for treating mania and depression, it is now better known as a vital element for the transition to renewable energies. Yet an increasing dependence on its extraction is causing the degradation and collapse of entire ecosystems. From salt flats in Bolivia and evaporation pools in Chile’s Atacama Desert to spa resorts in Europe, this bilingual and bipolar investigation brings together the arguments and views of activists, biologists, academics, journalists, architects, and philosophers on lithium extraction, pharmacology, and mental health. 272 p, ills colour, 17 x 24 cm, pb, English
