2022Evidence in motion III Den Haag, Nederland There is no life without any motion or movement - inspired by this thought thespectrum.space creates in its first collaboration with iii an interdisciplinary playing field in the form of a curated evening of performative works. The program questions “revolution” as balance and concentric movements by exploring the influence of gravitation in the physical and emotional world. “The motion of an object around a point, especially around another object or a center of mass.” Following the definition of revolution as mentioned in the quote above and as can be found in most dictionaries as the departure point for its first edition. Just like the earth moves around the sun and gravitates in perfect balance with it; how can bodies react to one another and find a balance between them, and what makes us gravitate towards one another? Through the lens and movement of the participating artists thespectrum.space aims to explore answers together. In its first edition, EVIDENCE IN MOTION welcomes Maarten Keus with his explorative research performances surrounding the influences of light spectrums on hormonal systems, Tingyi Jiangs and Dima Ibrahims performance that will remodel the space into a sonic apparatus and Bjarte Wildemans multi-body movement system that explores the connected interrelations of an equilibrium. Followed by Diane Mahín and Manuel Groothuysen who will take you into a sound-based performance in which two beings are stuck in an audio loop and closed by Lara Silva Santos, Ellisa de la Serna Gallego, Yaara Yaniv, Arefeh Hekmatpanah, Leon Lapa Pereira, who try to create consistency within the ever-changing paradigm of time and space, through their multibody performance. Together they will take us on a journey between light, sound and movement through solo, inter-human, and human to object-related performances that seek to find evidence in motion. Groep

2021Turmoil Club Holiday Bant , Nederland Turmoil is a danger performance/ intervention surrounding the exploration and search of gender acceptance, sexual identity, and confidence in life. Herein the performers take to a body of water with HIGH VOLTAGE devices of great struggle, resulting in a live choreography that isolates the performers from its audience. A Sox light growing and growing, illuminating the performance and isolating the situation from its audience. A suitcase with a large vibrating motor inside, shaking the entire body of its carrier, heavy to hold, vibrating, oscillating the body of water, Taking over the attention of the audience by loud noises carried over the body of water. Grinding, Moaning, Hurting. It's hard to safely but surely find each other within the turmoil of the dangerous fight. www.maartenkeus.net/turmoil Groep

2019Life after the warm up. ( artifical sun and KLAP OP JE BEK Grey Space in The Middle Den Haag, Nederland A work in collaboration with Berk Duygun, a social intervention and distopian situation art work. Questioning a post climate change dystipian world, what is still important for the human kind, where do we meet, how do we meet, and what do we miss in our lives. The complete work consist of a full exhibition of multiple artist and artworks, selected and curated by Berk Duygun in collaboration with Maarten Keus. As icing on the cake, a situational piece is placed in a basement. The experience is being in a 6 hour rave exposed to, instead of normal rave / nightclub aesthetical lights, a constant monochromatic light. Challenging the status quo of the nightlife scene, where indiviualism is inherent. By literally exposing everyone’s faces, presence and dance moves, the work tried to connect people more while being indulged in almost ritiualistic dancing. The basement (a otherwise visually known location for The Hague art and nightlife goer) was filled with 6 tons of sand, relating to the “Life After The Warm Up” concept, where humans would be inclined to artifically look up senses of nature, the sun (monochromatic light) and the nature in betweeen the bare toes. Artists involved in the entire work: Berk Duygun, Marlot Meyer, Ines delgado, Mižu NaZahradke, Soeria van den wijngaard, Kin Mun, Pamala Varela, ella hebendanz, Carlos Eperon Beltrán Siem Steeb, Maarten Keus Shown in Greyspace in The Middle, The Hague. In its current state it is a 5x5m net that is tensioned at extreme speeds to shoot a specific light bulb really high in the air only to then catch it at the last moment. It aims at exploring the relationship between father and son, attraction to fear and danger and the stigma surrounding men and emotions.

if our sun was green, what color would our skies be? iii Den Haag , Nederland As part of the research project ‘ways of responding’, a series of explorative performances, surrounding the influences of light spectrums on hormonal systems have been created. A set of interventions, so to say, Responding/ highlighting / amplifying / setting a tone for fellow performers during the evidence in motion performance event. This is done by exploring different specific wavelength frequencies of light through motion and poetic intent as a response to an ongoing research into the effect and possible manipulative nature of colored light. Each intervention and frequency decision has been carefully curated in collaboration with the performers and responds to the intentional nature of ‘their’ piece. All this relating to the research done, stories found, claims being made. How does this affect us, At this point in time, the path of exploring goes into scholar texts, mainstream finds/claims, personal stories, speculative thinking and discourse. Uncovering a mountain of contradictory claims, specifically between architectural/ governmental system/ social use of lighting versus the new hot item, that is light therapy, as a form of modern healing that claims to have miraculous healing properties. A lot of questions also arise from this research: Ethical questions of manipulation and Orwellian dystopian views, next to excitement of next level interactive storytelling on a biological level and ways of helping. Through this research and experimental interventional performances, I aim to share and have a better grip on light and color as a material, as much on an artistic/ design aspect as an awareness in our daily lives If we want it or not, if we close our eyes or not, this subatomic material, that is light, enters our body and alters our state of being.

Collective intent Royal Academy of Art The Hague Den Haag, Nederland Bachelor thesis. Writing and design, Design in collaboration with Camila Chebez Abstract: Using rituals, seeing something as a ritual or “artifying” certain acts allows us to destigmatize certain, in some cases, extreme practices. Including self-harm, bashing against others, putting yourself or others in danger, asking for trust, and performing otherwise socially unacceptable practises, can suddenly be accepted and form ways of catharsis. This counts not only for the devotee but for the audience and society as well. By changing from passive to active observers, by taking away shame or distrust around the act, we allow ourselves and others to see and to be seen, together or alone. This is something that can be extremely healing. Book bind, grafic design in collaboration with Camila Chebez Potetic and rythmic placing of word and text done by Maarten Keus For a deeper look into the design of the thesis, see: https://maartenkeus.stackstorage.com/s/WiWLfDx0gC0fIDuN To read and get a version in hand please contact to Maarten.keus@live.nl under subject: Thesis request

Louder together / Klap op je bek Den Haag , Nederland Performance about love, new love, movement, anticipation, taking risks and release. A more poetic and abstract work in the series. Confronting the audience with loud and almost unbearing bangs, when the bells hit eachother and wrap around each other, then fly off to once again meet. This performance plays intensely with the feeling of anticipation as more often then not these bells will miss each other rather then hit. A sensation of almost gasping, the almost sighing feeling in the top part of the body, that you feel when something goes wrong “almost” drasticly. Which can give a feeling of wanting more, but at the same time less. Materials: 2 metal poles 1,60m known as Amsterdamertjes or Haagenaartjes. Climbing rope. A collaborative piece with Soeria van den Wijngaard “ From outside to inside, defence to offence, constrained to released, muted to singing. Allowed to escape from confinement, allowed to move, act or flow freely. Admitted and acknowledged ” Maarten Keus “ Just like the scars that become visible in summer, simply because they don’t tan, the dents in the bell of one’s heart are inevitably revealed when played. When pushing the system in the right direction resonance is the result A mutual understanding An increase in amplitude When two similar vibrations interact they resonate Louder, together Slowly tremble and shake the illusionary fence of separation causing the orchestras of pain to play Louder, together Nothing to lose but fear as at the edge of sorrow joy is found Louder, together “ -- Soeria van den Wijngaard

Space romance bradfort spaceindustrie & royal acedemy of arts Den Haag , Nederland This project started off as a case study for the future commercialisation of space travel. We were invited by Bradford Space to come up with a problem statement and work from there to design solutions and possible outcomes in these future scenarios. Within these senarios I found beauty and poetry in reclaming being away from each other, taking distance from loved ones and romantising this. In this way the work became a statement piece. Talking about the way that being in constant connection with each other or at least having the possiblity of being in constant connection through the internet and by phone deromantises being away from each other. The waiting on a letter form a loved one, the extasy of being rejoined with your partner, or even just the waiting, has in my view and perspective been limited by being able to talk and even see each other constantly. This work proposes a suggestive senario that when being up in space, you could take this device with you, molded out of the hand of your loved one, partner or other. The device connects to a specialist suit, that has recorded a familiar embrace. These two devices can only be transmitting and receive when both space ship traveller and human on planet earth are in the right place and time. When the spaceship / hotel is orbiting right above the location on earth where the loved one is, it works: putting in perspective the distance and sublimity of the romantic situation. Longing for that time of having an intimate non-verbal connection with your loved one. The bombasticness of it having to be in space takes the work to a somewhat sacastical or almost cynical way (distopian / utopian) of trying to highlight the subject. A plaster hand with conductive fabric is constructed in such a way that when stroked in different patterns can trigger input signals into the microcontroller. Which in turn sends warmth to a body suit in specific spots, resembeling an intimate embrace. In this particular case the mold of the hand has been made of my fathers hand. Immortilizing him in a sence, since the thought of him leaving/ dying, made me feel ofthe distance between earth and a space ship. In my version of this story he is the loved one.

Antonymic ][ Assurance Royal Academy of Art The Hague Den Haag , Nederland Comfortability vs Uncomfortabilty. Giving power away as audience, putting trust into the maker. Installation & 2hr performance that places the audience on top of a big subwoofer covered with pillows to make it a comfortable experience. The subwoofers play a rather omnious soundscape, composed for this performance. By laying deep into the subwoofer, belly up, a feeling of letting go arises together with a feeling of vulnerability as the performers move around and perform different acts of comfort and discomfort. Being exposed to the power the performer has direct influence on where the level of comfort lies for the audience. Shown two nights at OPTIE B at Binkhorst The Hague A work in collaboration with performer and artist Tobias Mud.
