Commissioned by TOK curators for Colonial Endurance, Detecting the Algorithm of Violence in Infrastructures exhibition, at Het Nieuwe Instituut Rotterdam, Museum for architecture, design and digital culture. Part of the ongoing artistic research project "New Worlders". 2023 A dialogue between a young researcher and her dead explorer aunt, with the two protagonists 100 years apart and so speaking to each other from disparate times.

hrough the use of speculative fiction and a revisitation of the classic adventure-explorer narrative, New Worlders replaces the notion of the hero’s conquest of nature with a wide range of voices – both human and non-human, voices that resist being tamed. As the researcher moves deeper into the jungle, she encounters an interspecies alliance between an underground political movement, inheritor of the rubber tappers union from the 1980s, and an endemic fungus that affects rubber trees. This is an epistemological proposition to consider the intelligence of the forest. It also hints towards a solution to the problems posed by the ongoing devastation of the Amazon ecosystem. Graphic work, concept by Flora Reznik, design by The Oddkin.

5 channel video installation "New Worlders" points at the nickname colonisers gave to Americans, but also to the capacity to build new worlds. The young researcher, a Jewish Argentinian woman living in the near future, wonders about what took her aunt to the unknown. Through a fictional journey that takes responsibility for the obsession of "the West" about penetrating the so called virgin Amazon, she delves into the sexualised and violent narratives that haunt our imagination about that place: like worms in the skulls of the dead, like dreams in the minds of the living. This film is an attempt to create a different way of telling this story, by presenting a research based speculative near-future sci-fi story about the history and future of rubber, a hidden backbone of the global economy, much at the edge of collapse due to, in part, an unruly fungus. It concerns biopiracy in times of genetic engineering, the scope of synthetic fantasies, global production chains of supply, ecology, scientific innovation and resistance. Publication, Editor, Contributor and Artistic director. Published in Eindhoven, The Netherlands by Onomatopee Projects. A staged conversation between a historian, an anthropologist, three artists, an earth eater and an architecture theorist: they enter unknown grounds, it is dark, and a disembodied alien voice encourages them to move across uneven terrain. A temporary community of strangers is formed. A sense of agency and belonging emerges, but also of marginality and dispossession. Hybrid voices start to circulate and be heard, borders of disciplines are blurred and grounds for certainty are collectively explored anew. Each step leaves sources for a unique script. Script for a Synthetic Play delves into new world-making technologies, the need for refuge and infrastructures of care, human and land exhaustion and cultural and ecological challenges of today. Expertise meets experience in informal and approachable discussions that, stylized for dramatic effect, create a conversation piece in the form of a play activated by the generative power of fiction. This book stems from the performative symposium “Unknown Grounds'' (Leeuwarden, 2019, supported by art initiative VHDG and Tresoar Frysk Histoarysk en Letterkundich Sintrum), and features a fictionalized version of transcripts of conversations that took place during the event by Nathaniel Feldmann, and a collection of texts written by Sissel Marie Tonn, Bert Looper, Andrej Radman, Theun Karelse, masharu, Bert Boekschoten and Flora Reznik.

2022Mutations Fiber Festival Amsterdam, Nederland SHORT FILM. 30 mins. Now that we have crossed the threshold into an extremely unstable and hostile world due to a warming planet, wouldn't it be great to be able to start all over again? A livable future, full of possibilities, where we could start anew? But what if that world already existed before we explored it? The film New Worlders retells the story of human interference and the mutual effect nature and humans have on each other. In the film, fact and fiction is blurred. Artist Flora Reznik presents a research based speculative sci-fi story, in which personal explorations of family ties are interwoven with larger colonial histories, connected to processes like industrialization and global trade. A young researcher, a Jewish Argentinian woman living in the near future, learns about her aunt being one of the firsts to explore the Amazon, and wonders about what took her to the unknown. Through a fictional journey, she delves into the sexualised and violent narratives that haunt our imagination about that place: like worms in the skulls of the dead, like dreams in the minds of the living. This film is an attempt to create a different narrative, by simultaneously telling the tale of the history and future of rubber, a hidden backbone of the global economy. The rubber industry is very much at the edge of collapse due to a mutant fungus that attacks rubber plantations. An interspecies alliance with this fungus might be a way to overcome gene-edited resistant rubber trees, and bring back the wild distribution of rubber trees, scattered across the landscape. New Worlders concerns biopiracy in times of genetic engineering, the scope of synthetic fantasies, global production chains of supply, ecology, scientific innovation and resistance. The title points at the nickname colonists gave to the indigenous Americans, but also to the capacity to build new worlds. 2022.fiberfestival.nl/new-worlders Groep

Narva Art Residency’s annual exhibition 2021 Point of No Return. Attunement of Attention turns to the entanglements of life and death in times of ecological distress. The international group exhibition brings together works by 17 artists in the historical Kreenholm district, home to what once was the largest textile mill in Europe. New Worlders Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Acre, Brazilië www.florareznik.com/#/new-worlders/ An experimental nonlinear sci-fi story around the past and future of rubber where history and fantasy mingle. A young researcher retraces the steps of her (my) aunt Maria Reznik, who in 1943 became one of the first white women to explore the South Amazon by joining expedition Roncador-Xingu. Along the way, the researcher encounters a political movement that sees opportunity in the imminent collapse of the new gene-edited rubber industry, not a catastrophe. A mutant fungus known for attacking rubber plantations becomes an ally. Riverine creatures (human, nonhuman and the narrative) are affected by its sexual spores, which not only kill but also regenerate. Would ensuring the fungus prevails (with the risk of it expanding globally) allow for a less intensive but more distributed mode of production? Can we develop a fungal cosmology, a non linear view of reality, in which non-humans are considered agents, where life and death coexist as opposed to eternal growth dystopia? Installation and short film. Feature film currently in development phase.

What ever happened down Rio das Mortes? Rotterdam, Nederland www.florareznik.com/#/what-ever-happened-down-rio-das-mortes/ Part of the long term project New Worlders, "What ever happened down Rio das Mortes" is an installation that anchored in a dialogue between a young researcher and her dead explorer aunt, with the two protagonists 100 years apart and so speaking to each other from disparate times. The researcher sets out to retrace the steps of her great aunt, Maria Reznik, who in the 1940s left her job as a stenographer (a fast typing technology used to transcribe speech in shorthand, usually in court reports), and became one of the first white women to explore the Southern Amazon. She joined the Roncador-Xingu Expedition, a State initiative known for mapping the interior of Brazil and for “pacifying” the indigenous peoples, which led to decimation of the population and devastation of the environment.
