Have been thinking about shadows, as an ever-changing map of the world, a clock, or navigator. About how everyone’s shadow has the same shade. How it was with us long before we all turned into blue dots on google maps. A while ago someone told me “hope you enjoy the shade today!” and maybe in the future we’ll crave it more than the sun.

Objective Netherlands is a project initiated by Reinjan Mulder in 1974 whose aim was to show the authentic, ‘objective’ Netherlands. He developed a dogmatic method to photographically depict the country by applying a diagonal, square grid over the entirety of the Netherlands, defining 52 locations. Here, he would take four photographs—north, east, south and west—resulting in a catalogue of 208 images that represented the Dutch landscape. In 2017, I was invited to repeat and translate the project to current times. And I followed in the footsteps of Reinjan Mulder. The outcome is a cross-section of the Netherlands and a temporal comparison.

In 1980 my father hitchhiked approximately 8000 kilometres through Scandinavia. He was 17 years old at the time. My father’s choice to travel this way was an obvious and common one at the time. Hitchhiking takes patience and mutual trust. This was put to the test when my brother and I attempted to retrace my father's route in the summer of 2016; Curious to see how far we would get and who we would meet and hoping to get "under the hood" of contemporary hitchhiking culture.

In the 1800s a large fort was built close to the river at the city boundary to host Napoleon (who ultimately never arrived). One century later and for many years forth it was occupied by the Soviet regime. Thus, Daugavpils has for years managed to attain a strong defense and sense self-preservation. When I visited the city in april 2016 I was curious to see what marked its edges now. I followed the city border of Daugavpils as it was shown on the map. How – if at all – does the concept of a dividing line translate to the physical landscape? * This project was made during the first international photography symposium, held at the Mark Rothko Art Center in Daugavpils.

In this project I looked for places in The Netherlands which mankind has physically touched and adjusted in a recent time-frame. None of the processes that I photographed took longer than 80 years. Is it right to say that humans have become a part of the process of nature? How do we approach the landscape? And, most importantly, will we act more consciously after naming our actions?
