(english version) - The Topographer (by Kristel Nijssen) Man intervenes. Builds. Often in naked, innocent surroundings. A meadow. A hill. What most people don't understand is the intense relation between buildings and their surroundings, and the harmony they seek in each other. They are united in a forced marriage. Protest is impossible. The demolition ball won't come back for some decades. Christian van der Kooy's camera observes and considers. To start from scratch and to end in madness. Ugliness. Disharmony. Van der Kooy's work is not a charge against builders, urban and rural planners or architects. Rather, it is a registration. What is the product of a deficit of one thing (means and creativity) and a surplus of another (rules and regulations)? We are witnesses. Subjective topography. - New Grand Project: The name of project 'Local Colorists of the Black Sea' refers to a current in American literature that focuses on specific features of a particular region - including characters, dialects, customs, history and topography. The Black Sea has been a natural setting for many important historical events. Along the coast intriguing cultures coexist and melt; nowhere else so many different peoples live together. In this sea the twins 'civilization' and 'barbarism' had their first confrontation, such as Netherland’s historical writer Geert Mak called it. The coast itself, worn and silent, speaks of the patience of rocks, sand and water that experienced the restlessness of people, and still survive.. The topic Christian is interested in is the relationship of the sea with humans and their environment. They are mystically connected. Through several photo-essays about different parts of the Black Sea Coast I want to investigate cultural, social and economical tensions of the region.
