infoIn a playful but precise manner I research how objects act and affect their environments. Sometimes modular or interactive, often relating to the ‘functional’ and tactile characteristics of the material, a sculpture almost never refers to anything outside of itself. They are a result of logical steps influenced by the material, tools, people and the surroundings that came about in the making process. The Compromise My role is that of a mediator. I keep myself busy with creating uncontrollable conditions in which I have to compromise with what’s in front of me. I do this by mediating between materials, tools, audiences and people I work with. As a mediator I tried to establish a compromise between a tree and a beam. It caused me to kill trees working as an arborist in Australia. It caused me to study trees as a living organism. it caused me to look at trees as a material. It caused me to be in conflict. It caused me to feel guilty. It broth me to natural beekeepers, that mimic the natural environment of bees. It caused me to learn about the Eastern European tradition of tree beekeeping. This process resulted into sculptures, which I made with Mario Schott the arborist and trees that died a natural death on the premises of Schloss Kalkhorst in Northern Germany, tree beehives made togheter with Piotr Pilasiewicz. and a collaboration with natural beekeeper Geert van Kerckhove. Other sculptures started to grow around this on going project. Like 'A necklace for a tree' and a wishing tree.

2021ACHTUNG! SPIELPLATZ Vishal Haarlem, Nederland Claude Levi Strauss stelde, dat kunstenaars een bepaalde mate van spelen moeten beheersen, in staat zijn op toeval te anticiperen en deze elementen kunnen samenbrengen in het maken van hun werk. Alleen dan zou er werkelijke kunst ontstaan. Een negental kunstenaars toont sculpturen, die elementen van spel bevatten. De tentoonstelling geeft een frisse blik op hedendaagse beeldhouwkunst en speelt zowel met de mogelijkheden van de ruimte als met de onderlinge verbanden, die tussen de objecten ontstaan. Daarbij worden de grenzen van het medium opgezocht, tussen 2D en 3D, object en performance, kunst en gebruiksvoorwerp, de fysieke en de virtuele wereld. Compromise is inescapable, but somehow considered a weakness. I see compromise not as failing but as a quality that acknowledges the agency of others and other things. I play, trick, stretch opposites and shake up a worldview based on dualism, competition, opposition, demarcation and appropriation. 2018The width of a circle W139 Amsterdam, Nederland Op een metalen ondergrond ervaar je een immersieve installatie; een manifestatie van het gemeenschappelijke maken dat er naar streeft de tentoonstelling tot een plaats van reciprociteit en uitwisseling te maken. The Width of a Circle neemt een gedeeld visueel vocabulaire als basis waarin de vijf archetypische vormen van de ‘Platonische lichamen’ als vertrekpunt dienen. De kunstenaars – die allen hoofdzakelijk sculpturaal werken – zijn gevraagd om slechts gebruik te maken van beton, metaal, plastic en papier en zijn tevens uitgenodigd om, wat wordt omschreven als een vijfde ‘verlevendigend’ element, te verkennen. Deze methodologie biedt daarmee de parameters voor de ontwikkeling van nieuw werk dat de mogelijkheden onderzoekt van sculpturen als katalysator van experimentele activiteiten. 2018now or never #4 Gem Den Haag, Nederland Om de twee jaar zet GEM, museum voor actuele kunst, de schijnwerpers op kunstenaars die net zijn afgestudeerd aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) in Den Haag. De selectie van directeur Benno Tempel bestaat deze keer uit zeven Beeldende Kunst-alumni van de lichtingen van 2016 en 2017: Maria Bigaj, Lydia Buijs, Thijs Jaeger, Luis Maly, Renée van Roekel, Suzie van Staaveren en Gitte Svendsen. Samen presenteren zij hun uiteenlopende en verrassende werk in Now or Never #4. Suzie van Staaveren Speels en precies verkent Suzie van Staaveren (1991) de werking van modulaire objecten in de ruimte. Haar werk bestaat uit grote stalen platen met een felgekleurde poedercoat, die aan elkaar zijn bevestigd door middel van houten pinnen. Zoals bij constructiespeelgoed gaat Van Staaveren uit van een zelfbedacht modulair systeem waarmee zij haar Shapeshifters vormgeeft. 2017Hufterproof Gallerie Rianne Groen Rotterdam, Nederland Hufterproof: Ide André, Ricardo van Eyk & Suzie van Staaveren 14 October - 18 November Rianne Groen presents a group exhibition with new works by Ide André, Ricardo van Eyk en Suzie van Staaveren. While all three artists occupy themselves with formal qualities such as colour and material, the gesture plays a key part. The exhibition wants to offer a place for the changing nature of the working methods of these artists, in which the work can find new ways of connecting with itself and each other, like a jigsaw with multiple outcomes. The physical act of painting is a starting point in the work of Ide André (1990). The works show the roughness and traces of the way he manipulates the not yet stretched textile on his studio floor. Often he sows the bits of fabric together with his mother, lets people walk over the canvas or have children run around with them, adding a unique social element within the borders of abstract painting. The work of Suzie van Staaveren (1991) offers a new view on sculpture. Her recent series Shapeshifters consists of wall sculptures build from abstract, coloured parts that form different compositions. Starting point for this series are blown up paper snippets, executed in steel plates with a coloured powder coating. Through wooden pegs, they can be connected in several ways. The final works are decided during the build up of the exhibition. The work of Ricardo van Eyk (1993) derives from his way of looking at reality and a fascination with contemporary visual culture. He is especially attracted to the highly designed Dutch landscape, in which unforeseen traces and damage take place, mostly caused by human activity. This can also be seen in his use of material. 2017Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst Koninklijk Paleis op de Dam, Amsterdam Amsterdam, Nederland Suzie van Staaveren In de huidige hausse aan figuratie lijkt weinig ruimte voor abstractie. Van Staaveren (1991) vormt daarop een gunstige uitzondering. Speels en precies onderzoekt zij de grenzen van de schilderkunst. Ze is geïnteresseerd in de werking van objecten in de ruimte en door middel van sculpturale vraagstellingen onderzoekt ze de schilderkunst. Zo staat ze in de voetsporen van Donald Judd, die deze zoektocht in de jaren 1960 inzette en daarmee de grenzen tussen schilderkunst, sculptuur en productie van objecten oprekte. De mogelijkheid de vormen van de Shapeshifters te veranderen lijkt de toeschouwer uit te dagen. Niet voor niets spreekt Van Staaveren van een spel. Elke set beïnvloedt de mogelijkheden voor de volgende sets .
