Omschrijving werk

As a sculptor I work with garbage as a material and as a philosophic construct. I use the garbage of other artists (their studio by-products, their sculptures, their lost works) and waste materials in general to create my work. Dramatic transformation is key to this process. In the studio, I employ numerous transformational processes: “recycling” trash via 3D printing, metallurgy, and lapidary methods, among others. I spend a great deal of time thinking about planned obsolescence in design, the false dichotomy of nature and culture, and a “timeless” pattern called “tumbling blocks.” The objects that result from the transformative processes I employ often defy and confirm recognition – they are formally familiar and materially strange. It would be absurd to propose 3D-printing trash or laser-engraving wood scraps back into trees as possible “solutions” to our current ecologic crisis. Instead, I seek to investigate both the poetry and emotion involved in the paralyzing horror of complicity – to offer a way in that can act as a way out.
