Omschrijving werk

Guy Livingston is a sound, video and performing artist. Born in Tennessee, he studied music and architecture at Yale University; and piano at the New England Conservatory (with Stephen Drury, Wha Kyung Byun, and John Cage). After working in Paris at the IRCAM, and lessons with Claude Helffer, Livingston moved to the Netherlands to study at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He co-founded the Newt Hinton Ensemble, a European group based on a fictitious performance artist. Working under a variety of names, Livingston has explored identity, immigration, and exclusion in music, attempting to destabilize musical norms and create new pathways to listening. A major initiative has been his work as director of Le Piano Ouvert, a non-profit organization based in the Paris suburbs, which has produced more than 100 interactive workshops and concerts for drug- and alcohol-dependent patients since 2012. These participatory workshops involve instrument-building, breathing and vocal techniques, and musical improvisation. Musical and theatrical performances in the Netherlands include the Holland Festival, Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum, the IJsbreker and the Amsterdam Muziekgebouw, Vredenberg, November Music, and Dutch Design Days. Livingston’s sound installations and radioscapes, influenced by John Cage, contain fragments of music and speech, organized by chance, creating disorienting effects, remembrances, and reverberations for the listener.
