Omschrijving werk

Yael Levy (1983, Israel) is a multimedia artist based in The Hague, Netherlands. In her works she explores the interaction between image and sound, and the performative aspects of visual-art. Levy works with basic materials and often uses found objects and old machinery. The practice she follows is created on the foundation of replacing the functions of existing objects or conventions. In her works, she constantly alters the goals of the objects she is working with - exploring the potential of their functionality and crossing their borders. Alongside the "changing and replacing" method, she often works with a specific person, object or machine, focuses on their qualities and enhance them. The use of light is an important element in her work. She uses light to define the space and objects in space. The light is often used as an independent parameter, in many of the cases through projection and mirroring. The source of the sound and the image in her works is always defined. It can be hidden and abstract and / or clear and direct. The intention and the precision of the sources is significant to communicate her pieces. The performative element in her works is important, since she often works with sounds in a concert situation. In the performance, the balance between fixed medias and live performance is important as well. In most of her works she uses more live performance and creating on spot, and less pre-made materials. In most of the cases, she performs her own pieces. Levy draws her inspiration from the canonic avant-garde artists, from contemporary composers and sound artists, and from Dada, post Dada and ready-made movements. Another great source of inspiration derives from prehistoric, historic and traditional subjects.
