Omschrijving werk

I am drawn to areas and things overlooked or discarded, whether a crumpled piece of paper, private trauma or forgotten part of town. It is here I find a condition of relative invisibility. This creates an opportunity for a re-evaluation of value, to have a new look at how we see things. That any re-evaluation of value is accompanied by a feeling of insecurity is understandable. My work invites the viewer to pause and maybe become more accustomed to uncertainty, even vulnerability. It is precisely this location in-between, where personal experience meets the world-at-large, where the viewer might stop on the threshold and re-consider their point of view, even if only for a split second. Whether through a series of slumped drawings or an intervention in an awkward public space, my attempt is to establish a connection, even if it is one of misunderstanding, between interior and exterior dialogues, people and their surroundings. The drawing series Emotional Landscape is characterised by slippages and instability. The work invites the viewer to experience a feeling of precariousness, as horizons tilt and light vanishes. Collapsing, sagging, folded, the drawings are in a state of transition between standing up and falling down. Often placed into corners or lying against the wall, something abject and abandoned surrounds them. Drawn with pencil onto crumpled and scored paper, a topography of damage is mapped onto their surface. Open spaces surrounding the paper's creases are filled in with graphite, in a meticulous, time-consuming process. In an inversion of the “normal” drawing process, lines already embedded in the paper are slowly revealed by the filling-in marks of the pencil. Not only is the drawing process inverted, however; as the crumpled piece of paper is gradually transformed into something resembling precious metal, conventional notions of value are called into question.
