Omschrijving werk

Nostalgia is one of the most important features of the human perception. Without it we wouldn’t be able to emotionally consider the value of our personal but also collective history. Nostalgia helps us define ourselves. But, the way I perceive it, the feeling of nostalgia doesn’t necessarily have to be driven by a specific time frame or even by the factor time itself. Over the last +/– 20 years (the consensual term to define a melancholic memory to the past as nostalgia*) an acceleration has been taking place in both the way we consume information and the speed at which technology developes These two combined creates a shift in which pop culture is normalized and rendered subconscious almost instantly. As a result we exist in a non defined time but an ever changing one in which we cannot found firm ground. We are not nostalgic anymore to the certain past but to the certain change and present. Nostalgic feelings for the near past. Nostalgic feelings for the present. Nostalgic feelings for that which has not yet passed. Nostalgic feelings for that which has not yet begun. In my work I discuss and question what nostalgia means in a contemporary context. I research how its definition shifts over time and how it manifests in defining our lives and generation by any means of production, medium or discipline. Nostalgia says something about our past but also about our present and can help us think about the future. In a public context it discusses aspects of pop culture both objectively as well as subjectively. My work wants to introduce you to a collective truth; the feeling of nostalgia for things we didn’t think we could feel nostalgia for, for things we didn’t forget enough to even consider nostalgic, for things that are so common we forget they were even there. By decontextualizing these common and uncommon aspects of life a new perspective is given and we remember something new about them. Nostalgia is of the highest possible added value to a concept.
