Omschrijving werk

My artistic practice focuses around sculptural installation and often site-specific works. Space becomes a main part of the works, where elements are constantly repeated to demonstrate multiplicity and paint a landscape through sculptural forms. The themes explored in the works usually reflect the fragility and poetic sensitivity of the human being in juxtaposition to its harsh and destructive nature. Through out history, we see human civilizations and social systems blooming by the inventive mind of the people. Until at a certain point in time, that very creative nature turns in opposition to itself and functions as a destructive force towards what preceded it. I see this as the same slow process as how time and erosion turn a mountain into scattered grains of sand. Thus in my work I try to capture these feelings of futility, beauty and destruction that I witness in the world and bring them all back to a single space. Within this mindset, I have played with the destruction of objects and explored the distortion of symbols which are representative of the Greek culture ( from which I am coming from). A big source of inspiration for these themes was the witnessing of the economical collapse of my home country of Cyprus in 2012-3, and the subsequent rediscovery and transformation of values in a society that is experiencing an enormous shift in its social, economical and political layers.

Omschrijving “Tell me about countries that sound like the sea I” was the first of a series of works concerning the political, economic and social situation in the Mediterranean region. Since 2010 the Mediterranean region started to evidently suffer under the economic crisis while the effects spread from Greece through out the whole region. This series of works presents my view on the subject as a member of this region,observing how the cultural and social situation is declining identically with the economic decline. This particular work included 200 ceramic pieces which were broken by cutting the ropes holding stones, that were supported by the walls of the space. It portrayed the idea of Western powers and local governments squashing economically local households through out the Mediterranean and as a result destroying cultural and social values.

Omschrijving “Tell me about countries that sound like the sea III” continues with the theme of 'homelessness', where roof-tiles are presented standing on the floor in a soldier-like formation together with personal texts written on a concrete wall. The prototype for the roof-tiles comes from a region in Cyprus where buildings date back to the 15 th century, hence engaging with an architectural aspect of the traditional Cypriot method of building. The roof-tiles were reproduced out of clay in the Netherlands and were broken in the final installation by the audience who were enabled to walk through the installation in order to view the writings. This becomes a statement about the futility of having a 'home' if the foundations of it are unstable, fragile and broken by the simple action and ability of others to walk though and on them.

Omschrijving Part II of the series presents personal writings on the subject of the current situation in the Mediterranean region on the wall and a single, broken ceramic vase in the middle of the space. The vase contains clay dust in a metaphor of somebody or something carrying its own dust, while becoming a cultural relic or symbol.

Omschrijving Part IV of the series portrays the amphorae as a cultural symbol present through out the Mediterranean and quiet vital for the Greek-Cypriot society which relies heavily on such symbols and relics for defining the cultural identity of the island. The amphoreas are made without the help of the ceramic wheel, hence they do not contain the geometric perfection of the Greek amphoreas during antiquity. They suggest a culture in decline, without its basic characteristic present in the symbol shown here. They are further cut in order to highlight this idea further and state that a culture in its man-made, realistic form can not be 'ideal' as the past suggests.

Omschrijving “Untitled” is a work that approaches the idea of cultural ruin linked with the concept of immigration. The floor contains my personal writings consisting of observations about immigration and the mental inability to return 'home', associated with current political and cultural disappointment. My immigration from Cyprus to the Netherlands, as well as my stay in Israel,provided an opportunity to experience the position of a stranger in the society. The act of writing the text on the floor presents a reference to ancient, sacred texts carved on the floor of temples, while the broken bricks and wooden structure portray the idea of a cultural site of ruin which is, for me, relevant both to the Israeli and Cypriot society.

Omschrijving 'The witness of the destruction in the sea', reveals a silence that lingers around us as a secret. The silence in a remote place where things are broken by a destructive force. Only visited for specific purposes, either on site or on discussion & memory. The memory ties us to certain facts or pieces of history; which we tend to forget, and condemn thus to the past. However, when something broken is brought to the surface it might break the pattern of memory & forgetfulness. It can continue to be part of our lives & mark somehow its importance & relevance in issues that haven't yet been solved as pieces of history.

Omschrijving The “Brick experiments” were a series of small works that engaged with the idea of space and perspective through installation. Self-made concrete bricks were used for this experimentation works, since concrete is a material with a particular context and presence in Israel which still influences societal and cultural issues, yet to be addressed.

Omschrijving This piece is a re-arrangement of the work “Tell me about countries that sound like the sea IV”. Here the work is re-presented through a different engagement with space. The sculptures are shown in the form of a classical presentation in an antiquity museum in order to emphasize the idea of a cultural relic and enable experimentation with space.
