Magdalena Pilko
Disciplines: Fotograaf
Omschrijving werk
my artistic practice essentially consists of RAUMFAHRTEN (space travels). anchored in photography, these are narrative essays (extending to drawing, video and text) about space and time as visual motives, which question our perception and concepts of seeing. in pursuit of vanities, and keeping a delicate balance between precision and coincidence, my work can be seen as a plea for the variability of seeing, using somewhat minimalist language.
taking the very basic, what I ask myself is what we really see, given the amount of visual conventions surrounding us. what’s left and has not yet become a quote? examining this requires reduction and restraint; my research often goes to the edge of what is visible and I count on the viewers’ cooperation to contribute their own imaginary spaces.

adagio I |

2008 |
| Omschrijving |
The images of Adagio I are as calm and unfathomable as the moment that they capture, withdraw subtly into the abstract and invite the beholder to take a closer look. Part of this work is a book that reads as score in which the passing moment at the seaside is captured, delayed, prolonged, anatomised and reconstructed. Adagio aims at getting round some of the presumed characteristics of photography: a clear vanishing point, an obvious standpoint, “the right moment“, in short: the “capturing“ of reality. |

sense of continuity |
| Jaartal |
2009 |
| Omschrijving |
What’s the difference when looking left and right? How do moving people interfere? Sense of continuity plays with small differences between moments that are separated by a minor shift of position and their stretch of time. One might not, at first sight, realize any difference, but feel a change. Irritation is a trigger for re-orientation and invites to determine significance anew. Sense of continuity consists of ten photo-pairs. |

2010 |
| Omschrijving |
The video takes the observer on a one-shot travel through a botanic garden capturing the quickly changing shadow-silhouettes falling on a hand-held black & white notebook. It plays with notions of the intangible and transient and evokes feelings of anxiety associated with losing ‘the moment’. |

pretending to be outside |
| Jaartal |
2010 |
| Omschrijving |
Modulation of time is conceived as an essay on visual immanence based on observation, experience and empirical research rather than assumptions and preconditions. Three pieces including Pretending to be outside were developed introducing a view that is in poetical-radical opposition to the overall highspeed-addiction and delusional sense of feasibility. Pretending to be outside is a series of 20 photos on (visual) inversions. |
