Omschrijving werk
Kim De Ruysscher is a Belgian visual artist and sculptor. After graduating from the University College for Sciences and Art, Gent in 1996, Kim spent 10 years in Carrara, Italy. By working and living in the heart of a marble exploration area, Kim realized that the quality of a marble sculpture is closely related to specialist knowledge and technique. He combines his passion, appreciation and controlling of professional skills with his immersing knowledge of contemporary art. He works with marble, limestone, sandstone and recently started a project in Styrofoam but as well in natural, organic materials like ice, snow, and sand. De Ruysscher aims to make craftsmanship, virtuosity and an adherence to traditional techniques visible in his sculptures. In this way he hopes to provoke a debate about the importance of ‘craftsmanship’ in relation to contemporary art. Throughout the years De Ruysscher worked, exposed en won prices around the world. Kim De Ruysscher now lives and works in The Hague.
Kim De Ruysscher (1973)
Kim De Ruysscher was born in Wilrijk, Belgium in 1973. At the tender age of three, he started working with stone and art and at 17; Kim created a replica of a Newton telescope. He became acquainted with cubism, realism and expressionism and parallels can be drawn between his work and the Flemish primitive artists and the Italian arts. During his art training he built on his knowledge of art styles of these movements. In his work, Kim De Ruysscher aspires to capture the most important experiences of everyday life. In addition, his works educational function is very important for him. This combination is expressed at its best in his sculptures. In much of his work he refers to art history and tradition, for example by his traditional work with marble. He also works with perishable materials, which clearly show the artist’s work process or the interaction with the public.
