Omschrijving werk
Veronica Pock: "I am a textile artist and designer. I construct and embellish knitted and woven textiles, and create one-off pieces. My textiles escape two-dimensions, either through their construction, or through further manipulation or treatment. Sometimes they are made into products, such as fashion accessories or interior furnishings. Sometimes the experimentation involved in making the textile may mean that it is not ‘practical’; although it is unsuitable to be made into a product, it can be appreciated for its aesthetic or artistic merits.
Much of my inspiration comes from Nature and the science that we use to attempt to explain it. Pattern, scale and repetition are important to me: the pattern in poetry or prose, a verse or a single phrase, can inspire a piece of work. Finally, the material itself provides inspiration: I use textiles (papers, natural and synthetic fibres and fabrics, leather and found objects) because their impermanent nature reflects the character of my work.
I use a variety of techniques: dobby and jacquard weaving, knitting, layering and cutting back, and appliqué and collage, combined with embroidery, painting, printing, shibori and dyeing. I often contrast traditional and contemporary techniques and materials in my work.
Conceptually, my work explores the passing of time, history and memory, and the effects these have on people, places and objects. These ideas are interpreted in the textiles and final products that I create, either literally or by inference. My textiles are not flat pieces of material; they are many-layered, with depth and character. The story behind the textile, the process of its making, and things that might happen to it accidentally during its construction all add to its character as a piece of work."
