Floris Kruidenberg: "Perception is a central theme in my works. Often I’m trying to find methods to register or record whatever I see in such a way, that the criteria within which I’m looking are visible. I believe that this is the most honest way to make any statements about the reality that we see: by showing my personal limitations as an observer (my subjectivity), the statements that I make gain objectivity, because their validity gets defined more accurately. By displaying my observationmethods, I refer to a basic characteristic of perception: it’s limitation. On the one hand this limitation shapes and gives meaning to my observations, on the other it makes it impossible to have real, objective knowledge, to determine my exact position.
In my work I build and use observation- and measuring-instuments, because they enable me to say something about perception. On the one hand they have their limitations, showing that we can´t see or know everything, on the other they show that the only possible way to gain valid knowledge exists inside these limitations. My observational-instruments and –methods have their clear boundaries, but point at the same time at the infinite amount of possible observations within their boundaries, like a ruler is limited to only measuring lengths, but at the same time points to the abstract and infinite notions of length or distance.
By limiting my view, by fragmenting it, I disable the possibility of a total picture of reality. But the small pieces that I do see, I can see with more certainty, concentration and objectivity. Amongst others by drawing them, I can define and name them more accurate, and in reality it is not untill we have defined and named things, that we are actually able to see them.The looking-strategies and criteria that are part of an instrument block parts of my perception, and put the rest under a common denominator, making it possible to finaly compare and judge things, and give meaning to them."
