Elizabeth de Vaal
Disciplines: Mixed media/interdisciplinair kunstenaar, Schilder
Omschrijving werk
Elizabeth de Vaal
studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Thereafter she followed a postgraduate course at Ateliers ’63, which at that time was the only institute in the Netherlands offering high quality continuation courses. Ateliers ’63 operated very strict selection criteria and from the many applicants only very few were ever selected. Lecturers at the institute included the internationally recognised artists Jan Dibbets and Stanley Brouwn.
The most important painters in the Netherlands who started manifesting themselves during mid 70’s were brought together in two large group exhibitions under the titles ‘De Nieuwe Verbeelding’ [the new illusion] and ‘Fantasmagoria’ where in addition the work of De Vaal was represented next to the works of Rob Scholte and Henk Visch.
Later on they were regularly exhibited both at home and abroad. The Municipal Museum in Arnhem gave an exhibition of the Vaal’s work
and in 1986 a ten-year perspective was exhibited at the Central Museum in Utrecht. Last year she participated in the large ‘Cross Art’ exhibition in Bonn, Germany, which was put together by Jean-Christophe Ammann, former director of the Frankfurt Museum for Modern Art. Her work currently is on display at a number of companies and also in various museums and private collections.
As well as this Elizabeth de Vaal has taught at a number of art colleges over the last 20 years including the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. She has also been requested to work as external examiner for the final examinations at a number of major Dutch art colleges. She has been a member of a number of commissions and juries and has worked as an adviser for various institutions including Stroom HCBK in The Hague, and the Fonds voor Beeldende Kunsten, Vormgeving & Bouwkunst in Amsterdam [The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture].
She has received a number of awards for her paintings:
1978 De Koninklijke Subsidie [the royal subsidy]
1982 De Kunstbeeld Prijs [the art prize]
2001 De Jeanne Bieruma Oostingprijs [Jeanne Bieruma Oosting prize]
On two occasions: 1996 and 2000, she studied spatial design at the important Europees Keramisch Werk Centrum [European Ceramic Work Centre] in ‘s Hertogenbosch. This was followed in 2003 by a period at the Beeldenstorm in Eindhoven when she was guided in the making of bronze sculptures.
She was the ‘artist in residence’ at the Ohio State University in Columbus, USA in 1999 and in 2000 the Virginie Jansen Stichting invited her to come to France for a working period.
In June 2007 she participated with a group of international artists in a working visit and symposium in South Korea at the invitation of the ‘Nine Dragon Heads’ organisation.
In August 2007 she created a work 'in situ’ at ArToll in Germany.
After this followed in 2008/2009 The Landing Soon #9 project, initiated by Cemeti Art House Yogyakarta and HEDEN Den Haag
From 2004 she lives partly in Hungary and has been tutor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Pécs and De Vaal gave two workshops in 2007 at the same institute. A solo exhibition where three of her former students were invited to participate took place in the same year.
In 2007 she founded Stichting Post 15 with the purpose to invite Dutch artist to Hungary,
they can have a working period in a small village to learn more about the Hungarian culture.
She started the Keret Emese Galéria + Y ( KEGY means favour ) in Pécsbagota that opened the doors for the first time augustus 2009 with exposition of the artists Villeroy&Boch.
In the Accesoires Foundation she found a partner in working on a project for Pécs2010 about gloves, called FingerMarks. Elizabeth discovered that there are in Pécs a lot of gloves factory producing gloves for famous fashion designers for example Channel, Hugo Boss, Vivien Westwood, Escada and Louis Vuitton. Artist and designers are invited for workshop and a symposium will be organized.
A new art project in Hungary will start in 2010 called VOLpension, artists are invited to give ideas what should happen with a piece of land 2000m2 with an old house in a small village.
